The Shootist is the 1976 western that marked the final role for John Wayne. In the film, Wayne plays an aging gunfighter dying of cancer who faces one last duel.
The following guns can be seen in The Shootist:
Colt Single Action Army
The Colt Single Action Army is used by several characters in the film including J.B. Books (John Wayne) and Jack Pulford (Hugh O'Brian).
Remington 1866 Derringer
J.B. Books (John Wayne) carries a hidden Remington 1866 Derringer, and uses it at the beginning of the movie
Great Western
The Great Western revolver is also used in the film. These Single Action Army Replicas, made in the 50's, were the revolvers used by John Wayne in the film. These were a set of 2 engraved revolvers presented to him by the defunct Great Western company. According to the well known gunwriter John Taffin, the revolver that is thrown through the saloon by Gilliam Rogers (Ron Howard), is not one of the Great Westerns, but a movie prop, made using a Ruger Blackhawk, modified to look like a SAA. http://www.shootmagazine.com/articles/firearms/great_western.htm
Winchester Model 1892
Books also carries a Winchester Model 1892 rifle with a large loop lever, just like the one he used in other films like True Grit. The rifle is never seen fired.
"Coach" shotgun
A double, short barreled shotgun also is used in the film.
Smith & Wesson New Model No.3
Jack Pulford (Hugh O'Brian) carries a Smith & Wesson No.2 break-top revolver with a 6" barrel.
