Nice, but where's the trigger?

This article or section is incomplete. You can help IMFDB by expanding it.

Vietcong 2 is the sequel of the tactical first person shooter Vietcong. As in the first edition, the player will take the lead of a Special Force's team of the US army during the Vietnam War, as the Captain Daniel Boone. Differently from is predecessor, this time is possible to play as a Viet Cong in a short secondary campaign and act the part of Minh, a young vietnamese from a unknow village of the South Vietnam. Both US and vietcong campaign will take place during the "Tet offensive" in the Januar '68, around the city of Hue.

Arsenal mangement:
During the single player campaigns the player is allowed to transport a knife, a handgun, two primary weapon and a lot various equipment (two type of handgrenades, C4 explosives, LAW and a first-aid kit).Differntli from Vietcong the player cannot choose his starting equipment during the campaign, this possibility is present only in the "Single Mission" mode, where the gamer can play the missions one by one. With few exception, the non-playing character haven not a "fixed" weapon but a casually selected weapon: it's easily notable that the most part of the enemy may be equipped with different guns each time you play a mission. Also can be noted some "weapon groups" for this variations: earlier Viet Cong may spaw armed with a SKS or a MAT-49 or a PPSh-41, NVA soldier and later Viet Cong are armed with a SKS or a Vzor 58 or an AK-47, VC machine gunners may have a Vzor 59 or a RPD-44 for example. The exceptions are the teammate, the snipers, the RPG gunners and the Viet Cong armed with the IZH-43. However these last two gunman drop a casually generated handgun.
Another notably odd (and ghastly) thing is that the most part of the weapon are chambered with a wrong caliber, but all these error will be described in the weapon details.

The following list contains all the weapons that can be used or see in Vietcong 2:

US Army/ARVN weapons

The most part of this weapon are obviously of US manufacture, but due the presence of Australian army soldiers in game (the team's medic Cobber is Australian) is possible see (and use) english weapons of Australian ordnance

Handguns

Colt M1911A1

Main U.S. pistol, is a standard equipment in most missions of the U.S. single player campaign. Rare see it used by U.S. Army soldiers in single player but the Viet Cong armed with shotgun or RPG-7 may drop it after their killing. As in Vietcong is the most common siederarm for the U.S. multiplayer classes.

Smith & Wesson Model 27

Special forces sidearm, it's really accurate and seems to be reloaded using speed loaders. Despite in multiplayer it's described correctly as a .357 Magnum, the ammo found for it are named .38 Special (usable without problem on this gun, but notoriously less powerfull) but still have more stopping power than a standard Colt .45. As the M1911A1 it may be dropped by some Viet Cong and in multiplayer is the pistol equipped to U.S. "Infantryman" and "Medic" classes and Viet Cong "Fighter" and "Medic" classes.

Smith & Wesson Mark 22 Model 0

Appear as "S&W Mod.39(sil.)" and is equipped with a silencer. Oddly it shares the .45ACP ammunition of the M1911A1 instead of the correct 9x19 NATO, same error made in Vietcong. It is equipped in a few mission in the U.S. campaign and is the standard pistol for the U.S. sniper in multiplayer.

Machine pistols/Submachine-gun

Thompson M1A1

U.S. submachine gun, generally see in the hands of the ARVN soldiers. Accurate and powerfull it feature a 30 rounds magazine, despite the 3D models resemble a 20 rounds magazine. In multiplayer is quiet common see it in the hand of expert player.

Carl Gustaf M/45

Swedish submachine gun used by special forces. The player start equipped with it during the first mission. It features a 36 round magazine and high rate of fire (despite the real one had a somewhat slow rate of fire), is enought common throughout the ARVN soldiers during the first two mission of the Viet Cong single player campaign.

Sterling L2A3

English submachine gun, used only by Cobber in several missions. Use 34 rounds magazine and as the M/45 feature a fire rate higher than its real counterpart. Share ammo with the M/45.

Sten Mark IIS

Another english submachine gun, fitted with silencer. The Sten isn't used by any character, not even is a starting equipment in any mission but one may be found in the second mission while entering in the building occupied by Viet Cong in front of the bridge. Share the same 9x19mm ammunition of the M/45 and of the Sterling.

Ingram MAC-10

U.S. machine pistol. Teorically it was used by the U.S. Special Forces, but in game it isn't used by any character and cannot be find durind any missions. It may be used in multiplayer or selected as primary weapon in the "Single Mission" mode. Oddly its ammunition result to be the 7.65mm Browning, the same of the Vz.61 (probably for more direct comparison between the two guns), moreover both M10 and Vz.61 have the same "shoot" sound.

Battle/Assault rifles

Colt XM177E2

Assault carbine used by U.S. Special forces, equipped in five mission during the single player campaign and issued to the ARVN's Hac Bao riflemen during the last mission. While using the iron sight is notable the absence of the rear sight in the carring handle. Shares the magazine with the M16.

Colt XM16E1

Main U.S. assault rifle, appear as "M16". Used by the U.S. Marines throughout the game. Use 20 round magazines loaded with 18 rounds, probably to avoid jamming(the guns never jamm in Vietcong 2). Is avaible a second version fitted with an experimental Colt XM148 grenade launcher.

L1A1

Australian battle rifle. Despite the real rifle is capable of semiautomatic fire only, in game can switch fire mode between automatic and semiautomatic, as the M14. Cobber (the medic) use it in the last mission but the player never use it, while in multiplayer is available only for the U.S. "Infanterist" class. Share ammunition reserve with M14 and the XM21.

Springfield Armory M14

U.S. battle rifle, used in game by the U.S. Marines aside the M16. Despite the strong recoil, it isn't much more powerfull than the M16 and the XM177.

Machine guns

Browning Automatic Rifle M1918A2

Old U.S. squad automatic weapon, alternative weapon to the M60 for the U.S. machinegunner. Quite easy to find along both campaign, it work like a "empowered" M14, with hight fire rate and more reserve magazines (the BAR allow to carry 15 magazines against the 6 of the M14/L1A1). Unrealistically it fire the same 7.62x51 ammunition of the M60 and appear that it do not have a proper type of magazine (when killed, a BAR gunner drop the same ammunition pouches of the M60)

Saco Defense M60

Main U.S. general purpose machine gun also nicknamed "the Pig" or "the Hog". It is obviously the signature weapon of Stone, the U.S. machinegunner and moreover the Vietnamese machine gunner Tran use it during the first mission of the Viet Cong campaign (the night assault on a ARVN compound). The model seen in game feature the rear sight raised and the bipod removed. It may be used by the player as individual weapon (using 100 round pouches, for a maximal number of 400 round) or mounted on fortified positions and patrol Jeeps, with unlimited ammunition.

Browning M1919A4

Medium machine gun. Can be used in multiplayer by "Machine gunner" class of both teams as a diplaceble tripod-mounted support weapon. It feature unlimited ammunition, but is affected by barrel overheating.

Browning M2HB

Classic heavy machine gun. Common along both campaign, mostly seen mounted over U.S. vehicle such as M-133 APC, armed REO trucks and UH-1 transport helicopters. In multiplayer is usable by U.S. machine gunners in similar manner to the M1919A4: compared to its .30 caliber sister the M2 have a slower fire rate but a major stopping power.

Shotgun

Remington M870

U.S. pump action shotgun, commonly used by the radioman Tommyboy and is seen in the hand of the ARVN Captain Soat. Extremely powerful at short and short/medium range, it feature synthetic furniture istead of the wood one's in use at that time. Its worst drawback are the slow rate of fire and the long reload time.

Bolt-action/Sniper rifles

Winchester Model 70

.30'06 caliber bolt action rifle, its most distictive characteristic is the raised pantograph-style rear sight. Extremely powerful, , it feature the most slow reloading animation where the character take more than a second to insert a single cartridge. May be found only during the last mission of the U.S. campaign, in multiplayer is not so popular, probably due its long reload time.

Remington M40

U.S. Marine Corp bolt action sniper rifle, the weapon 3D models seems based on a M40A1 and then "skinned" with a wood-style texture. Despite it must be reloaded with similar operations to that used on the model 70, here a character can load more or less 3 cartridge per second. Use 5.56x45 cartridge, extremely odd since the M40 as been ever chambered for the 7.62 NATO ammunition.

Springfield Armory XM21

First version of the M21 marksmen rifle, appear to be created using one of the latest military issue M21 rifle as model because the scope and the scope attachments are differet from the original low-profile ART telescope. Use the same ammunition reserve of the automatic M14 and of the L1A1, making it the sniper rifle with the major number of ammunition. Probably the most common weapon used by the U.S. sniper in multiplayer, despit is also the most weak sniper rifle of the game.

Viet Cong/NVA weapons

As in its predecessor, in Vietcong 2 the Vietnamese resistance uses mostly soviet-made weapons, but this time there are several exception as the French MAT-49 and the German StG-44.

Handguns

During the U.S. campaign each one of these pistols may be dropped randomly by the vietnamese fighter armed with the Baikal Izh-43 and the RPG-7V (along the Colt .45 and the S&W mod.27). Can be noted the absence of any variation of Tokarev's pistol, whom where (and currently are) the standard sidearm of the Vietnam People's Army. Morover no one of these pistol uses the right ammunition type!

PM

The first model of Makarov's pistol. Here appear as a 9x19 Parabellum pistol, but a Cold War era soviet-made weapon that uses NATO ammunition is a really bad error.

PM - 9x18mm 57-N-181S

Nagant Model 1895 Suppressed

An uncommon variant of the Nagant revolver with a large silencer mounted instead of the barrel, with the iron sight mounted directly over the silencer. Despite its odd look, similar revolvers were really crafted by many soviet arsenals during the Second World War for operation "behind the enemy lines". Use the same .38 Special ammo of the model 27 revolver, despite it have to be chambered for the older 7.62x38R.

Mauser C96 Model 1912

A full size semiautomatic C96 pistol, with fixed box magazine reloaded using 10 rounds clip. It can be reloade at any time, no matter how many cartridge are left in the magazine and animation shown ever the that the ten round of the clip are shifted into the pistol's magazine. The ammunition are claimed to be "9x18 Makarov", despite the 3D model of the clip shown clearly that the bullet are too long to be cartridge calibre 9 Makarov. An other strangeness: in multiplayer this pistol is equipped only to the Viet Cong class "NVA soldier" (teorically a regular soldier of the North Vietnam Army/Vietnam People's Army), where instead a Makarov will be more probable.

APS

Russian pistol with selective fire, may fire in semiautomatic or fully automatic mode. It is chambered for the .45 ACP, shares ammunition whit the M1911A1 and the Mark 22. However it still the most versatile handgun of the game.

Machine pistols/Submachine-gun

Samopal vzor 61

Comapact machine pistol, somewhat uncommon in U.S. campaign. Seems to be the weapon of choice for the "VC Officer" who lead Minh in the Viet Cong campaign.

Manufacture nationale d'Armes de Tulle modele 49

French submachine gun. The MAT-49 is a remain of the French army from the First Indochina Conflict. Commoly seen in the hand fo the Viet Cong fighters during the U.S. campaign. Quite accurate, like the major part of the U.S. submachine guns feature a too high rate of fire. Use 9x18mm Makarov ammunition, instead of the original 9x19mm Parabellum or the 7.62x25mm Tokarev chambered in the locally converted models. Despite it have its proper "shoot sound" in the game's archives, fore some unknow reason use the same sound of the Vz.61, like the MAC-10.

PPSh-41

Soviet submachine gun fitted whit the charapterical drum magazine. It is used mainly by Viet Cong fighter, but can be see used also by the ARVN troopers when they execute the villagers at the start of the Viet Cong campaign. Seem's to be a little less powerful than the other submachine gun, however is second only to the M60 and the RPD-44 for number of ammunition available.

Can be find only in the third mission of the U.S. single player campaign. In multiplayer instead is really appreciate, and is normal to see it in action in the most intese firefight.
