Also, the third Ithaca pic (if it really is a shotgun) makes me think of the Winchester M97 Trench Gun. --[[User:Slon95|Slon95]] ([[User talk:Slon95|talk]]) 18:00, 4 August 2020 (EDT)

Rifle IDs

I'm not too sure about some of the rifle IDs on the page currently.

The rifles ID'd as Lee-Enfields do not look like Enfields at all. Some have a protruding rods under the barrel, lack the Lee-Enfield's muzzle, and we can also see what appears to be a hook for stacking rifles in a pyramid, which the Lee-Enfield series lacks.

I believe these guys are using the MAS-36. It's hard to tell, but the front sights and receivers look like the ones on a MAS-36, not to mention the thick rod that contains the bayonet under the barrel. In the fourth picture you can faintly make out the deep groove cut into the foregrip. In the fifth picture, you can clearly see the stacking rod.

The "Marlin Ballard" is some kind of flintlock rifle, or maybe a cartridge breechloader. The hammer can clearly be seen in this image:

Lord Asriel hits a Samoyed tribesman with the buttstock.

In the other images, you can see it doesn't have a lever either.

As for the rifles the Tartars use, I don't see too much Carcano in any of them. Some of them use Jungle Carbines, but judging by the screencaps, there's a mix of rifles there. There may be a Carcano in there, but it's hard to tell. Most of the rifles don't appear to have the distinctive protruding magazine like Cracanos or Lee-Enfields have. Some of them even look Mauser-ish to me.

Does anyone have any thoughts? --PyramidHead (talk) 19:41, 3 August 2020 (EDT)

  • Doubtless MAS-36.
  • I'm not sure but the "Marlin Ballard" may be a visually modified Trapdoor Springfield Rifle, the breech looks similar.
  • The Mosin on The Golden Compass rifle 4 3.jpg is an M91 Infantry, not M91/30, as we can see the top barrel band on the end of the forearm. --Greg-Z (talk) 01:48, 4 August 2020 (EDT)
Your ballard is German-style "Schuetzen". --Slon95 (talk) 10:26, 4 August 2020 (EDT)

And the rolling block is more like a regular break action. Maybe one of those 19th century Belgian pistols or something. --Slon95 (talk) 10:22, 4 August 2020 (EDT)

What is identified as "Berdan Sharps 1859" - on three first screenshots the gun seems to be a Snider-Enfield Cavalry Carbine. The rifle on the following screenshots may be a different one (or maybe the same...). --Greg-Z (talk) 14:51, 4 August 2020 (EDT)
