Terror by Night is an American 1946 detective movie, directed by Roy William Neill and starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. This is the thirteenth installment to the series of fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Rathbone and Bruce. The story is original, with minor plot elements of "The Adventure of the Empty House", "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax", and "The Sign of Four". Lady Margaret Carstairs travels by train to Scotland, having the famous diamond Star of Rhodesia with her. Her son Roland asks Holmes to protect the diamond. But during the way, Roland is murdered and the diamond is stolen. One of the passengers must be a murderer and thief.
The following weapons were used in the film Terror by Night:
Ruby Pistol
Maj. Duncan-Bleek (Alan Mowbray), who turns out to be a criminal Col. Sebastian Moran, carries a pistol of Ruby family. During the climactic scene this pistol falls in hands of police Inspector MacDonald (Boyd Davis) and his constable (Colin Kenny) (these policemen also turn out to be ciminals in disguise), and at last the gun is used by Inspector Lestrade (Dennis Hoey).
Air Pistol
A fictional air pistol, shooting poisoned gelatin darts, is used by Moran's accomplice Sands (Skelton Knaggs) and then by Moran (Alan Mowbray) himself. The prop is non-functioning but has workable pump button and trigger and is "powered" by two common CO2 chargers for soda siphon.
Lee-Enfield
A scene on a diamond mine in Rhodesia where the diamond was found shows native guards holding rifles that appear to be Lee-Enfield of unclear model.
