The FN Model 1949, also known as the FN-49 or SAFN, is a battle rifle designed by Dieudonné Saive, who would later be the lead designer of the more famous and widely-used [[FN FAL]]. Design work on the Model 1949 began late in 1938, but was severely delayed by the German occupation of Belgium in World War II. The design was completed in 1947, and put into production in 1949. The Model 1949 was not widely adopted, as surplus [[M1 Garand]] rifles were being widely exported by the time the design was completed, but it was used by Belgian forces in the Korean War.
