Season 3 of True Detective features Mahershala Ali as Wayne Hays and Stephen Dorff as his partner Roland West, two state police detectives from Arkansas investigating a macabre crime involving two missing children across three time periods (1980,1990 and 2015). Nic Pizzolato, who wrote all eight episodes of Season 1, scripted all eight episodes of Season 3, with David Milch and Graham Gordy assisting him in scripting two, and several episodes were directed by Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room). Season 3 premiered on HBO on January 13, 2019.

Smith & Wesson Model 15
An ASP officer in 1980 is briefly seen armed with a Smith & Wesson Model 15 in "If You Have Ghosts" (S3E05). In "The Final Country" (S03E07), Detective Wayne Hays (Mahershala Ali) is seen using a Model 15 instead of his Colt Python in a continuity error.
In "The Great War and Modern Memory", Hays and West inspect a photo of US soldiers in Vietnam with their M16 SP1 rifles.
