Giovanni's Island (ジョバンニの島 Joban'ni no Shima) is a 2014 anime movie directed by Toshihiko Nishikubo. Shortly after the end of World War II on an island in the north of Japan: Junpei lives together with his younger brother Kanta, his father and his grandfather on this island. The everyday life of the inhabitants was carefree and peaceful until one day the Red Army came to the island and occupied it. Houses are confiscated and food threatens to become scarce. At school, the boys meet Tanya, the daughter of a Russian soldier. Despite cultural differences and language barrier, a friendship develops between the girl and Junpei. But when his father is deported to a Soviet labor camp for helping the starving population, a world collapses for the children. In the midst of the harsh winter, the two brothers embark on an arduous journey to find their father again.
