The Way Back is a 2010 American movie directed by Peter Weir (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) that is inspired by the 1956 novel The Long Walk by former Polish prisoner of war Sławomir Rawicz. In a Siberian labor camp, Pole Janusz (Jim Sturgess), Russian Valka (Colin Farrell), American Mr. Smith (Ed Harris) and other prisoners meet and form an alliance for survival. Together they forge an escape plan, which they put into action during an ice storm. They exert themselves superhuman efforts to get into their respective homeland. And it is a lossy path that leads the community from Siberia through the Gobi Desert and even across the Himalayas.
