I find it strange that sources say that the French called it a submachine gun, especially since all the sources are in English and none in French. A comment on the Wikipedia comment page for the weapon said that the Frenched called it pistolet mitrailleur not because it used pistol rounds, but because it had a pistol grip but no butt. Is there any source that confirms that? --Wuzh (talk) 02:20, 24 April 2018 (EDT)

:Nobody would have called it submachine gun, the term didn't exist until 1921. Evil Tim (talk) 02:28, 24 April 2018 (EDT)

But I wouldn't take any comment made by a French user on a wikipedia gun article seriously since they all seem to be there to pretend France invented everything. So probably just someone trying to argue it was the first assault rifle. Evil Tim (talk) 02:28, 24 April 2018 (EDT)

Submachine Gun?

I find it strange that sources say that the French called it a submachine gun, especially since all the sources are in English and none in French. A comment on the Wikipedia comment page for the weapon said that the Frenched called it pistolet mitrailleur not because it used pistol rounds, but because it had a pistol grip but no butt. Is there any source that confirms that? --Wuzh (talk) 02:20, 24 April 2018 (EDT)

Nobody would have called it submachine gun, the term didn't exist until 1921. But I wouldn't take any comment made by a French user on a wikipedia gun article seriously since they all seem to be there to pretend France invented everything. So probably just someone trying to argue it was the first assault rifle. Evil Tim (talk) 02:28, 24 April 2018 (EDT)
