Though the barrel, magazine tube, and pump slide are all extensively modified (if not built from scratch by Serbu), the rear 2/3 of each gun is exactly the same as the original, thus the base gun is very easily recognized by the receiver and bolt.

Serbu Super Shorty Shotgun made from a Maverick Model 88 - 12 gauge

The Serbu Super Shorty is a customized short shotgun, manufactured by the Serbu Firearms Company in Tampa, Florida. The company begins with a standard shotgun which was originally manufactured and shipped without a shoulder stock, and has been declared as a pistol on certain paperwork. Serbu currently manufactures Super Shorties built from Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s, though in the past, most or all (depending on the time) of their guns were built on Maverick 88s. A "deluxe model" with a front sight and front sling swivel used to be available for an extra fee, but all current production guns have the front swivel and no sights (though the receivers are drilled and tapped for a scope mount, by the original manufacturer).

Though the barrel, magazine tube, and pump slide are all extensively modified (if not built from scratch by Serbu), the rear 2/3 of each gun is exactly the same as the original, thus the base gun is very easily recognized by the receiver and bolt.

Contrary to popular misconceptions about sawed-off shotguns, Serbus and other professionally made or modified shotguns tend to perform equivalently to any longer-barreled cylinder bore shotgun. At worst, buckshot patterns might be 2 or 3 inches larger at 7-10 yards, and accuracy with slugs is very rarely affected at all. The generally poor patterning and accuracy of homemade "sawed-off" shotguns is usually related to poor quality squaring and crowning of the barrel(s), often using nothing more than a hacksaw, mill file, and sandpaper--and sometimes using less.
