Blue Thunder is the 1984 television adaptation of the 1983 film. The series was not a continuation of the film, but instead followed a special unit within the Los Angeles Police Department that used the helicopter to fight crime. The cast starred James Farentino, Dana Carvey, as well as former NFL stars Dick Butkus and Bubba Smith. The series was broadcast in competition with the similarly themed Airwolf and only aired for 11 episodes in the US on ABC.
