Starbuck's "sniper" rifle in episode 3
Battlestar Galactica is the "reboot" of the 1978 ABC sci-fi television series that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel from 2004-2009. Unlike the original series, the majority of the weapons used are authentic weapons visually modified for the production.
In episode three (Bastille Day), Starbuck goes with the marine strike team because of some ridiculous reason. Anyway, she is not using a P-90 like the rest of the marines. She appears to have a rifle that I have been unable to identify, due to there being no clear shots. There are only two clues: first, when she boards the raptor to go to the Astral Queen, the rifle is slung on her back, and you get a brief glimpse of the back of the butt. Later, when she failed to kill Tom Zarek with her shot, you see the underside of the front of the rifle. Interestingly, it almost appears to use the same flash hider as the Cx4's used in the late reasons. But I still cannot identify this rifle. Thoughts?--Fidget (talk) 05:10, 16 October 2016 (EDT)

Colonial Handgun (Smith & Wesson Model 686)
I'd like to compare certain parts of the visible trigger guard as well as the frame above it.

<br/>
A heavily modified Smith & Wesson Model 686 L-Frame revolver is portrayed as the standard Colonial sidearm in both the Battlestar Galactica mini-series and the first season. Among other features the weapon has an under barrel explosive launcher (like the old LeMat "grapeshot" barrel,) although the explosive launcher was never used onscreen. The Miniseries version had hardly any real functionality and was redesigned almost from scratch for Season 1 when scripts required more specific actions with the guns. After that it was redesigned again and, starting with the early second season, the original sidearms have been nearly completely replaced by the FN Five-seveN. These guns were inconvenient as they had to be disassembled before they could be reloaded. They later returned during the flashback scenes in "Razor."
*First off, the hump right above the trigger. That is clearly visible on the Python (1) as well as the futuristic pistol. The 686 DOES NOT have a hump.

*Second, the frame screw and seam. Both, again, are clearly visible on the Python (2) as well as the futuristic gun but not on the 686.
The gun appears to have been intentionally designed to resemble the gun used by Rick Deckard in Blade Runner (probably to emphasize the realistic tone of this series, as opposed to a "future show with laser-guns").  It also notable that series star Edward James Olmos also played the mysterious police officer Gaff in Blade Runner.
*Third, the trigger. The trigger of the futuristic pistol is very similar in shape - note the flat cut before the trigger curve - to the trigger of a Colt Python (2) than the 686.

*Fourth, the frame curve. The curve behind the cylinder where the hammer normally is visible, on the futuristic pistol, shallows out and ends in a rounded hump. Comparing the frame curve of the 686, it does shallow out, BUT the end of the frame is sharper and angular compared to the futuristic revolver. If we take a look at a Python (3) the curve matches exactly to the one in the futuristic pistol.

*Fifth, and last, the logo. If you look at the 686, the S&W logo is right next to the edge of the grip. However, taking a look at the Futuristic revolver, no logo is seen - where did it go if it was a 686?  If you take a look at the Python (3), although, the Colt "Bucking Horse" logo is placed very close to the cylinder and cylinder latch - where it can be and it is covered up by shell.

*Oh, also, the S&W 686 is only available in a stainless finish. However, even if you compare the blued 586 (which I have included above), the same reasons still apply.

<br/>P.S. It can be noted, however, that it necessarily isn't a Colt Python - to that I say that it IS a Colt manufactured revolver, and NOT a Smith & Wesson one.

:You have made one big assumption in that reasoning, and that is that you are basing it off of that gun image rather than looking at the screen used guns. I'm not 100% but I believe that that image is a prop replica made by Matsuo which uses a Colt Python as a base. If you look at screenshots of the guns from both season 1 and the miniseries, you will see that they do not match the shape of the Python (or any other Colt revolver) but do match the 586 or 686. You are right that the 686 is only stainless, however the whole gun could have just been painted once it was assembled (in order to give the whole thing a consistent finish), or the whole thing could be a resin casting made from a 686. Compare this image of the gun used on screen to that of the replica and you will see that they are different. It is widely known in the replica prop making world that basing these guns off of Pythons is wrong, but people still seem to do it because they prefer the look. --commando552 (talk) 16:55, 24 September 2017 (EDT)

:: Lol, I just wanna add that I think you could have done just one comparo set of images - that is, one 686 and one Python and that would have done (just a notation about the blued vs stainless would have been enough there). That said, I would agree that - solely in regards to that above gun image - you are right that it appears a Colt wheelgun due to the profile of the rear frame, lower frame-trigger guard and trigger itself. However it doesn't match with the guns in the screenshots, which C552 goes over nicely. I agree with him that it is ultimately more likely a prop piece entirely, and NOT with a Colt as the base there. == Colonial Standard Military Sidearm (FN FiveseveN) ==
::: Hah, ok. Didn't notice the screen gun wasn't the same as the prop gun :P. -SeptemberJack (talk) 17:41, 24 September 2017 (EDT)
From Season 2 to the end, this weapon became the standard Colonial Military sidearm.  It is a slightly modified original-run FN FiveseveN. It keeps the underbarrel explosive launcher. This changeover allows for real semi-automatic fire and makes use of the existing stores of 5.7 x 28mm blank ammunition. The explosive launcher was muzzle loaded, and was featured in the second season episode "Valley of Darkness," but not prominently afterward.

FN P90
For the mini-series and Season 1, the FN P90 was the main assault weapon of the Colonial Marines aboard the Galactica.  The attachments for the weapons (flashlight, red dot sight) are somewhat the norm for the "real world" the only difference being the attachment of a suppressor which seems to be more for dramatic effect than anything else, though may have been used to disguise the use of PS90 semi-automatic civilian models. In later seasons, the Beretta Cx4 Storm would replace this SMG, most likely due to the P90's prominent use in the series  Stargate SG-1.  However, the P90 would still be used (in a more minor role) throughout the run of the series.

Feather AT-9 Pistol
(Based on photographic evidence only) A pistol version of the Feather AT-9 Carbine was apparently used as the basis for the Cylon Pistol.  The pistol grip was replaced with a FN FAL grip and an additional 'notch' was cut into the receiver tube to hold the bolt, since it had been converted into an open bolt select fire weapon (The original AT-9 was a closed bolt semi auto only firearm).

Seburo MN-23
In the Miniseries, the Colonial security personnel on Galactica are armed with this bullpup assault rifle. It bears a resemblance to a short-barreled FAMAS with a Picatinny rail mount. This rifle was actually designed by Masamune Shirow for the Dominion: Conflict comic series, and is known as the Seburo MN-23. No known working model of this gun has been seen, so odds are during the mini-series they were the airsoft props with added flashlights. Obviously since this weapon doesn't fire or technical crew changed their minds to the Cx4, this weapon along with the Raisen only appeared briefly during one scene on the Ragnar station during the mini-series. This rifle appears to be a standard weapon for the non-military security personnel onboard Galactica.

CQB TYPE-0 "RAISEN"
The weapon possessed by Leoben Conoy (a Number 2) at Ragnar Station is a fictional variant of the AR-15, known as the Close Quarters Battle Weapon Type Zero, aka the "Raisen". It is a model gun designed by Poseidon Industries of Japan, a company that also makes the Seburo MN-23. In the Mini-series, Leoben's Raisen had a flashlight, sling and sight attachment to it. It is most likely a non firing prop since no known working model of the Raisen has even been seen to my knowledge. Obviously since this weapon doesn't fire or technical crew changed their minds to the Cx4, this weapon along with the MN-23 only appeared briefly during one scene on the Ragnar station during the mini-series.

During the siege of Kobol, Chief Tyrol is seen using this single shot grenade launcher against the Cylon radar dish.  The weapon itself appears to have some ornamentation (a jacket over the barrel) so it is a little difficult to identify. However, given the presence of complete trigger guard, cocking handle and the shape of the stock it is not a stand alone M203 but the Cobray M79LF.

Starbuck's "sniper" rifle in episode 3

Is the futuristic pistol really a 686? It looks a LOT more like a Colt Python.

REFERENCE IMAGE 5 - S&W 586

I'd like to compare certain parts of the visible trigger guard as well as the frame above it.

 • First off, the hump right above the trigger. That is clearly visible on the Python (1) as well as the futuristic pistol. The 686 DOES NOT have a hump.
 • Second, the frame screw and seam. Both, again, are clearly visible on the Python (2) as well as the futuristic gun but not on the 686.
 • Third, the trigger. The trigger of the futuristic pistol is very similar in shape - note the flat cut before the trigger curve - to the trigger of a Colt Python (2) than the 686.
 • Fourth, the frame curve.
 • Fifth, and last, the logo.
 • Oh, also, the S&W 686 is only available in a stainless finish. However, even if you compare the blued 586 (which I have included above), the same reasons still apply.

I rest my case. -SeptemberJack (talk) 15:27, 24 September 2017 (EDT)
P.S. It can be noted, however, that it necessarily isn't a Colt Python - to that I say that it IS a Colt manufactured revolver, and NOT a Smith & Wesson one.

You have made one big assumption in that reasoning, and that is that you are basing it off of that gun image rather than looking at the screen used guns.
Lol, I just wanna add that I think you could have done just one comparo set of images - that is, one 686 and one Python and that would have done (just a notation about the blued vs stainless would have been enough there). StanTheMan (talk) 17:33, 24 September 2017 (EDT)
Hah, ok. Didn't notice the screen gun wasn't the same as the prop gun :P. -SeptemberJack (talk) 17:41, 24 September 2017 (EDT)
