I noticed that all of the british commandos walk around with the Thompson's bolts closed...I thought this was just a movie mistake, but during action scenes, they pulled the triggers (bolts closed), the guns ''fired'' and then the bolt moved backwards....but weren't Tommyguns open-bolt operating?

: The original Thompson safety could only be applied with the bolt cocked open. For safety just walking about with a loaded magazine in place, the British cut an extra safety notch on the 1928 bolt so the safety could be applied with the bolt closed on an empty chamber. I would expect to see Brits toting Tommy Guns with the bolt closed with a magazine in place unless immediate combat was anticipated. That second safety cut was adopted by the US with the M1 Thompson series. Good Brit idea.
: All original Thompsons fired from an open bolt moving forward when the trigger was pulled. I am not sure about the operating mode of movie blank firing Thompsons; the blank firers may be closed bolt. --[[User:Carl N. Brown|Carl N. Brown]] ([[User talk:Carl N. Isn't it odd how Rains, when he fires his M1911A1:

  • runs out of ammunition after three shots, even though he hasn't used the pistol at any point during the mission;
  • doesn't have the slide lock back after the gun runs out; and
  • manages to get his gun to do some kinetic clicking even though it's a single-action?
