In 1969, Polanski's pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, was murdered by members of the Manson Family. In 1977 Polanski was arrested for rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious acts upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor, eventually pleading down to only statutory rape. To avoid sentencing , Polanski fled to his home in London, eventually settling in France, where as a French citizen, he can avoid extradition to the United States. He has been unable to enter the United States ever since, and since he has already plead guilty to a crime, no statute of limitation applies.
