The CETME Model L is a Spanish assault rifle derived from the earlier CETME Model A, B and C battle rifles. It was produced in three varieties: the full length Model L, the carbine Model LC variant which had a shorter barrel and retractable stock, and the marksman Model LV variant which had a STANAG scope mount instead of the rear sight which normally held a British SUSAT as seen on the SA80 rifle series. Originally the rifles were fitted with a full length square handguard similar to that seen on the Heckler & Koch G3 but this was found to retain heat when firing in full automatic so most military weapons switched to a half length rounded handguard with the front portion of the barrel being covered by a perforated stamped steel heat shield similar to the FN FNC. However, Guardia Civil rifles kept the full length square handguard due to the reduced need for sustained fire.
