The Accuracy International Precision Marksman (PM) is the progenitor for the Arctic Warfare series. Chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, the PM was the winner of a British MoD competition in 1985 to replace the L42A1, and was adopted as the L96A1.

The Precision Marksman can be distinguished from later Arctic Warfare models by its lack of more modern features, such as its use of dovetail instead of Picatinny rails, lack of muzzle devices, fixed backup iron sights (though police barrels had no backup iron sights and had a special flash hider built into the barrel), lack of a finger cutout in the magazine well, and completely flat sides. Early PMs are fitted with a Schmidt & Bender 6x42 optic (designated L13), later replaced with the Schmidt & Bender 3-12x50 (designated L17A1) by the time of the Iraq War, the latter being taken off of the L118A1 Arctic Warfare rifles in British service at the time.

The original Arctic Warfare is developed from the Precision Marksman, and the basis for the entire Arctic Warfare series that followed. Following Britain's adoption of the Precision Marksman, Sweden approached Accuracy International and requested for a sniper rifle like the L96A1 that would function well in arctic environments—hence the name "Arctic Warfare". The Arctic Warfare featured a whole package of improvements compared to the Precision Marksman, such as better furniture material, better scope, grasping tabs on the magazine, and the use of Picatinny rails instead of dovetail rails.

Based on the PM (Precision Marksman), or L96A1 as it is known in the British Military, this model is the basis for the Arctic Warfare series of tactical rifles and is currently produced in calibers .243 Win and 7.62x51mm NATO and normally fitted with a 660mm (26") match grade barrel for accurate long range performance. The .243 Win has a 1 in 10 twist and the 7.62x51mm NATO has a 1 in 12.

The .243 Win has a 1 in 10 twist and the 7.62x51mm NATO has a 1 in 12. The 7.62x51mm NATO version AW is fitted with a muzzle brake which serves to reduce recoil and muzzle flip. The AW is normally supplied with a 10-round box magazine. Both versions are housed in either olive drab or black stock panels and black metalwork. Butt length can be adjusted by fitting spacers to suit the shooter.

This weapon is adopted as L118A1 (fixed stock) and L118A2 (folding stock) in the British military (in limited numbers by special forces), Psg 90 (Psg standing for Prickskyttegevär, or "Sniper Rifle") in the Swedish military, and SR98 in the Australian military, the SR98 variant featuring extra modifications like a threaded barrel and a free floating barrel.

The AWM is based on the AW rifle with minimal changes to accommodate Magnum length cartridges. Detachable box magazine which takes 5 rounds. Normal calibers are .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum. Designated L115A1 Long Range Rifle within the British military, the latter as the AWSM (Arctic Warfare Super Magnum) or L115A3 LRR. It is described by Guiness World Records to be the most advanced sniper rifle of all time and was used by Cpl. Craig Harrison of the British Army to establish a new record distance for a confirmed kill shot in Afghanistan in November 2009, surpassing the previous record held by a TAC-50 fired by Cpl. Rob Furlong of the Canadian Armed Forces. The .300 Win Mag version (AWM-F), equipped with a folding stock and Zeiss 3-12x56 SSG scope, is used by the German Bundeswehr as the G22.
The AWM is based on the AW rifle with minimal changes to accommodate Magnum length cartridges. Its detachable box magazine holds 5 rounds. Normal calibers are .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum: the latter is also referred to as the "AWSM" (Arctic Warfare Super Magnum) though this is not an official designation from the manufacturer. Folding stock versions are suffixed -F.

The British military adopted three versions of the .338 Lapua Magnum version of the AWM, designated L115A1 through A3 and named "Long Range Rifle". The L115A1 LRR features a fixed stock, Parker-Hale bipods, and a 3-12x scope. The L115A2 is a slightly improved version with a AI bipod and a folding stock. The L115A3 LRR is a finalized improved version fitted with a threaded muzzle brake, suppressor, dark earth folding stock, butt spike, adjustable Harris bipod and Schmidt & Bender 5-25x56 PM II LP sight. The German Bundeswehr adopts a .300 Win Mag version equipped with a folding stock and Zeiss 3-12x56 SSG scope as the G22.

An L115A3 was used by Cpl. Craig Harrison of the British Army to establish a new record distance for a confirmed kill shot in Afghanistan of 2,707 yards (2,475 m) in November 2009, surpassing the previous record held by a TAC-50 fired by Cpl. Rob Furlong of the Canadian Armed Forces. This record was later certified by Guinness World Records.

The AWP rifle has a stiffer and shorter 610mm (24") barrel to maximise precision. Usual calibres are .243 Win (1 in 10 twist) and .308 Win (1 in 12 twist). The rifle is designed to perform best with match-grade ammunition. Butt length can be adjusted to suit the firer by using spacers. The AWP differs to other models, in that it's the only AW weapon system to have a black finish.

Accuracy International Precision Marksman

Error creating thumbnail: File missing
Accuracy International PM - 7.62x51mm NATO

Accuracy International AW-F - 7.62x51mm NATO

The original Arctic Warfare is developed from the Precision Marksman, and the basis for the entire Arctic Warfare series that followed. Following Britain's adoption of the Precision Marksman, Sweden approached Accuracy International and requested for a sniper rifle like the L96A1 that would function well in arctic environments—hence the name "Arctic Warfare". The Arctic Warfare featured a whole package of improvements compared to the Precision Marksman, such as better furniture material, better scope, grasping tabs on the magazine, and the use of Picatinny rails instead of dovetail rails.

It is currently produced in .243 Win and 7.62x51mm NATO, and normally fitted with a 660mm (26") match grade barrel for accurate long range performance.

G22A2 - .300 Win Mag

Craig Harrison of the British Army to establish a new record distance for a confirmed kill shot in Afghanistan of 2,707 yards (2,475 m) in November 2009, surpassing the previous record held by a McMillan TAC-50 fired by Cpl. Rob Furlong of the Canadian Armed Forces. This record was later certified by Guinness World Records.
