Escanaba in da Moonlight is a 2001 independent comedy written, directed, and starring Jeff Daniels, based on his play of the same name. Other than co-star Harve Presnell, who also narrates the film, most of the other actors are regulars of Daniels' "Purple Rose Theatre" company in his hometown of Chelsea, Michigan. The film is set and was shot on location near the town of Escanaba in Michigan's Upper Penisula (the "Yoo-Pee"), and features the culture, the hunting traditions, and quite noticeably, the regional accent of the local "Yoopers." Daniels plays Reuben Soady, the Yooper who has never bagged a buck, in a region where opening day of deer season was "Christmas wit' guns."
The following firearms were used in the film Escanaba in da Moonlight:
Marlin Model 336C
The Marlin 336c in .30-30 Winchester is used by Reuben Soady (Jeff Daniels). His father Albert (Harve Presnell) also uses Reuben's rifle in a few scenes.
Remington 870 Field Gun
A Remington 870 Field Gun is used by Jimmer Negamanee from Menominee (Wayne David Parker).
Winchester Model 70
A customized Winchester Model 70 is used by Reuben's brother Remnar (Joey Albright).
Remington 700
Albert Soady uses a Remington 700 as his hunting rifle.
Smith & Wesson Model 686
Ranger Tom T. Treado (Randall Godwin) carries a Smith & Wesson Model 686 as his service weapon. He draws it while searching the forest for what he believes is God.
Savage Model 29A
A young Rueben Soady (Alex Mulvaney) uses a Savage Model 29A pump action rifle while rabbit hunting.
12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun
"Family idiot" Uncle Alvin (a cameo by writer Guy Sanville) bags his first buck with a hammerless double barreled shotgun at the age of 43 "during the taking of the traditional opening day morning crap" in a flashback. It is not explained why he had a shotgun in the "two-hole" (outhouse).
