War of the Worlds is the 2005 science fiction thriller directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise as Ray Ferrier, a dock worker who finds himself along with his two estranged children in the middle of an alien invasion of Earth.  The movie is another feature film adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel The War of the Worlds, but like the famous 1953 adaptation, the 2005 version only uses certain aspects of the book, namely the nature of the invading aliens.

Before leaving his house with his family, Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) grabs an Taurus .38 Special revolver from a case under his bed. He is later seen firing it into the air to disperse a mob swarming his comandeered minivan, but is forced to drop this gun when a carjacker steals the van. A bystander then picks up the pistol and shoots the carjacker with it, trying to steal the van himself.

Another weapon used in the final battle scene of the movie is the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank guided missile launcher, used by US Army soldiers to attack a tripod. An Army squad leader is heard calling for one of his men to bring "the javelin". Despite the squad leader saying that the tripod will require a "top kill" (utilizing the missile's top-attack mode), the soldiers fire the missiles straight at the tripod, which the Javelin cannot actually do as even its direct attack profile climbs and descends diagonally.
In the scene where Rachel Ferrier (Dakota Fanning) is captured by one of the tripods, Ray Ferrier finds a bandolier of M26 hand grenades in an abandoned Humvee (despite the M26 not having been in use by the U.S. since the end of the Vietnam War) and throws one at the tripod to get its' attention. Once captured by the tripod, he uses the rest of the grenades to destroy it from the inside out. **Whoever wrote this does not know their hand grenades: it was the M61 which was not used following Vietnam, and the M26 predates the M61; the photo titled "M26" is of an M61, not the older M26 (note the safety clip not found on the M26). The movie photo actually looks like the modern M67 grenade.**

War of the Worlds (2005)

War of the Worlds is the 2005 science fiction thriller directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise as Ray Ferrier, a dock worker who finds himself along with his two estranged children in the middle of an alien invasion of Earth. The movie is another feature film adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel The War of the Worlds, but like the famous 1953 adaptation, the 2005 version only uses certain aspects of the book, namely the nature of the invading aliens.

The following weapons were used in the film War of the Worlds (2005):

Handguns

Charter Arms Off Duty

Before leaving his house with his family, Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) grabs a Charter Arms Off Duty revolver from a case under his bed. He is later seen firing it into the air to disperse a mob swarming his commandeered minivan, but is forced to drop this gun when a carjacker steals the van. A bystander then picks up the revolver and shoots the carjacker with it, trying to steal the van himself.

Rifles

Colt M4A1

In several scenes, U.S. Army soldiers can be seen carrying M4A1 carbines, most notably while directing refugees through Boston near the end of the film. When an alien dies after its tripod is disabled, one of the soldiers uses the barrel of his M4A1 to lift and then drop the alien's arm to confirm it is truly dead. The M4A1s in the film are seen fitted with various accessories such as RIS foregrips, M68 Aimpoint, Trijicon ACOG, and AN/PVS-14 night vision scopes, C-More red dot sights, Surefire Universal weaponlights, and AN/PEQ-2 laser systems. They can also be seen in the hands of Marines during the hilltop battle scene.

M240 Machine Gun

In the scene where Ray and Robbie are arguing as the Army convoy passes, several M240 machine guns can be seen, both mounted on the vehicles and in the hands of some of the soldiers riding in them. Army and Marine Corps M1 Abrams tanks and Marine Corps LAV-25 armored personnel carriers are also equipped with M240 machine guns; the Abrams having an M240C coaxially-mounted next to the main gun and both the Abrams and LAV-25 having the M240D version mounted atop the turret.

Browning M2HB

The Browning M2HB heavy machine gun appears twice in the film; first mounted on US Army vehicles in a convoy that passes by the Ferriers, then on US Marine Corps vehicles in the hilltop battle scene, most notably on a burning Humvee rolling past Harlan Ogilvy's (Tim Robbins) house.

M249 SAW

Near the end of the film, a few US Army soldiers seen herding refugees through Boston and then taking down a tripod can be seen wielding an M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, most notably when surrounding the downed tripod when the pilot emerges and dies.

M197 Vulcan

During the hilltop battle scene, US Marine AH-1W Super Cobras can be seen armed with chin-mounted M197 Vulcans, though they only engage the off-screen tripods with Hellfire anti-tank missiles.

Shotguns

Winchester Model 1912

Harlan Ogilvy (Tim Robbins) is often be seen with a Winchester Model 1912 shotgun close by him, first seen holding it in the air following the hilltop battle scene to signal Ray and his daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) to him. He comes close to using it when some of the aliens are prowling around the basement of his house where he, Rachel, and Ray are hiding, but is stopped by Ray for fear that opening fire would reveal their location to the aliens.

Rocket Launchers

M141 SMAW-D

During the hilltop battle scene, an M141 SMAW-D rocket launcher fitted with an AN/PVS-4 night-vision scope can be seen being fired by a US Marine at an off-screen tripod.

FGM-148 Javelin

Another weapon used in the final battle scene of the movie is the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank guided missile launcher, used by US Army soldiers to attack a tripod. An Army squad leader is heard calling for one of his men to bring "the javelin". Despite the squad leader saying that the tripod will require a "top kill" (utilizing the missile's top-attack mode), the soldiers fire the missiles straight at the tripod, which the Javelin cannot actually do as even its direct attack profile climbs and descends diagonally.

BGM-71 TOW

When the Army convoy is passing by the Ferriers, several Humvees can be seen with BGM-71 TOW launchers mounted on them. A few TOW launchers can also be seen on Marine Corps Humvees during the hilltop battle scene.

Carl Gustav M2

In the final battle scene, US Army soldiers can be seen firing several Carl Gustav recoilless rifles at the tripod. The squad leader specifically refers to them as a "Gustav". Even though this weapon is only used by special forces units in the US military, not regular infantry as shown in the film, when aliens attack, it can be assumed you scavenge what you can.

Grenades

M67 Hand Grenade

In the scene where Rachel is captured by one of the tripods, Ray Ferrier finds a bandolier of M67 hand grenades in an abandoned Humvee and throws one at the tripod to get its attention. Once captured by the tripod, he uses the rest of the grenades to destroy it from the inside out.
