I don't think it should be considered odd that a SOE officer is using an M1 carbine. I know that the SOE Jedburgh teams that were parachuted into France on and after D-Day were for the most part issued M1A1 carbines. I don't know much about SOE's Force 136 that operated behind the lines in South-East Asia, but from the information I was able to find it appears they did use M1 carbines.
