Alphaville (full French title Alphaville, une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution) is a B&W 1965 science fiction film about an American private detective who goes to a futuristic city on another planet that has outlawed all emotions and expressions. Like many science fiction films of the time, the authors predicted that our world would be far more dystopian and futuristic than it has become. Since the protagonist is a World War II veteran (and not an old man), the future society depicted here happens in the "1970s". The director was famed French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard. The American Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine) seeks a scientist and eventually meets up with the man's daughter, Natacha von Braun (Anna Karina), as a way to find him. The tension of a building love between the man and the woman in a society that has outlawed love was a common theme in SF literature of the time, the most obvious to many people being the doomed love story in the book and film 1984.
