The "muzzle brake" misconception came about with the A2 birdcage flash hider. There was a belief that the omission of the bottom slot was intended to perform a braking function, when in reality it was done simply to reduce the amount of material kicked up while firing from the prone position. muzzle break or flash suppressor

A picture has the following caption:

Lt. Ring with the AR-15/SP1 in Grenada, his also featuring full-auto fire, making it a possible M16 with a birdcage muzzle break as well.

While the flash suppressor here is oft referred to as a 'birdcage' type, it is most certainly not a muzzle break. "Flash suppressor" or "flash hider" are acceptable. This piece does no braking (notice 'brake' is the proper spelling) when the rifle is fired. Also, as the early flash suppressors are radially symmetrical, it would also be unreasonable to suggest it causes any compensating effect.-140.146.30.103 18:08, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
