He uses the shotgun to kill a death row inmate being transported in order to get another inmate with knowledge about the kidnapped girl to trust him. If you watch closely you'll notice Scott work the action twice. It is my belief that this is not an editing goof, but rather Scott making sure the shotgun is empty so that it will fall on an empty chamber when he pulls the trigger on the inmate he is trying to manipulate. Spartan is a 2004 thriller written and directed by David Mamet and stars Val Kilmer as a Special Ops instructor who is brought in to help locate the President's kidnapped daughter. The technical adviser on this film was former Delta Force operator Eric Haney, who would later collaborate with Mamet to create the series The Unit, which is based on Haney's experiences in the Delta Force.
