The INSAS Assault Rifle is the standard infantry weapon of the Indian Armed Forces. It based on AK-47 and FN FAL assault rifles. Persistent quality control and reliability issues prompted the rifles to be deemed defective in 2012 and pulled from issue in "red zones" in 2015 in favor of older and imported rifles as the Indian army searches for a replacement, which was later chosen in the form of the AK-203 and SIG-716i for the rifle version and IMI Negev variants for the LMG version.
