Genre: Real-Time tactics

Developed by Altar Interactive, UFO: Aftermath is a real-time tactics game heavily inspired by the original X-COM, (Altar bought the rights to a cancelled X-com successor, The Dreamland Chronicles: Freedom Ridge, though Altar found the game's engine too unfinished to be usuable and made their own game using some of the story concepts from it.) just like the original X-COM, the player will fight battles on a tactical view, just now in real time and use a geoscape view to select missions and pursue research and development of weaponry to fight back the Alien Threat that has almost completely wiped out humanity.

Many weapons in the game are capable of a "Burst" firing mode, though often single-shot weapons such as handguns have a "Burst" mode, any weapon that isn't a Sniper Rifle, Shotgun or Rocket Launcher usually has a burst function, the game also splits weapons into "Pistols", "Rifles and "Heavy" weapons, which often feature weapons that are simply "close enough" in that category. (for instance all submachine guns use the "Pistol" category and skill and Shotguns go into the "Rifles" category in-game, Sniper Rifles also go into the "Rifles" category in the equipment menu despite using their own seperate aiming skill.)

While the game does correctly track what caliber a weapon uses in the in-game Glossary, weapons use non-interchangable magazines in-gameplay.
