The MPi 69 and the MPi 81 are two 9mm open-bolt submachine gun of Austrian origin. The original MPi 69 was introduced in 1969, and notably, it had a feature where its charging handle also acts as the forward sling mount; the weapon is cocked by grasping the sling and pulling it left and down slightly to release the lock, then pulling it rearwards. The updated MPi 81 introduced in 1981 replaced this novel feature with a conventional charging handle, and the forward sling mount was relocated to a hanger mounted on the barrel retention nut. Additionally, a secondary "buffer" spring was added to the recoil mechanism on the MPi 81, which raised the gun's cyclic rate to 700 RPM, versus MPi 69's 550 RPM.
Magazines were made in 25rd and 32rd capacities, retained by a heel clip type release. Similar in profile to the Uzi, the Steyr SMG is constructed of a square steel tube upper that contains the bolt and barrel, and the plastic covered sheet steel lower which contains the grip and firing mechanism. The guns used a cross-bolt selector with 3 positions, safe, semi, and full auto, although the gun can still fire single shots in the full-auto position by pulling the trigger only halfway.
