The Suffering is a third-person shooter survival horror video game developed by Surreal Software in 2004. It was released for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC. It's worth mentioning that the legendary Stan Winston designed the creatures for the game.

The game tells the story of Torque, a prisoner on death row for murdering his ex-wife and two children, a crime of which he claims to be innocent, saying he blacked out and cannot remember what happened. Shortly after he arrives in Abbot State Penitentiary on Carnate Island, off the coast of Maryland, an earthquake hits the island, resulting in the prison being attacked by unusual supernatural threats. So Torque needs to attempt to fight his way to freedom, whilst also going up against the demons within him, and attempting to remember what really happened to his family. The game features three endings, depending on the players' actions throughout, each of which reveal a different version of the murder of Torque's family.

The Suffering received primarily positive reviews. The sequel was released in the 2005.

The following weapons appear in the video game The Suffering:

Taurus Model 689

A Taurus Model 689-style .357 4-inch revolver is depicted in the game and named simply "Revolver." This firearm is the sidearm of the C.O.'s of Carnate Island. Can be dual-wielded.

Remington 870

One of the weapons located throughout the island is a sawed-off Remington 870. Why correctional officers would have sawed-off shotguns is anyone's guess.
