And Quiet Flows the Don (Tikhiy Don) is a co-production British-Russian-Italian drama mini-series, a screen adaptation of the famous novel by Mikhail Sholokhov. It depict the fate of a Don Cossack family during the World War One, Russian revolution and civil war. The series was directed by Sergey Bondarchuk and filmed in 1990-1992 but due to the bankruptcy of the Italian film studio, the unfinished film and all working materials were confiscated by the lending bank. Only in 2005 the materials were purchased back, and the series, finished by Sergey Bondarchuk's son Fyodor Bondarchuk, was at last released in 2006.
The TV series is the third screen adaptation of Sholokhov's novel, following the 1930 B&W movie and the 1957-1958 three-part movie directed by Sergey Gerasimov, and preceeding the 2015 TV series directed by Sergey Ursulyak.
The following weapons were used in the film And Quiet Flows the Don (Tikhiy Don):
Revolvers
Nagant M1895
Grigoriy Melekhov (Rupert Everett), Mikhail Koshevoy (Mikhail Vaskov), a White Army Gen. Sidorin (Nikolay Zasukhin) and an unnamed officer carry Nagant M1895 revolvers during the scenes of the Russian Civil War. Nagants are also briefly seen in the scenes of the WWI. All Nagants are of post-1930 version.
Rifles
Mosin Nagant M1891 Dragoon and M1891/30
A mix of Mosin Nagant M1891 Dragoon and Mosin Nagant M1891/30 rifles are used by the Austro-Hungarian soldiers during the WWI and by Reds and Whites during the Russian Civil War.
Mosin Nagant M1891 Infantry
Mosin Nagant M1891 Infantry rifles are seen in the scene in the Revolutionary Committee building.
Mosin Nagant M1938 Carbine
Anachronistic Mosin Nagant M1938 Carbines are also used by Reds and Whites, notably by Grigoriy Melekhov (Rupert Everett), Pyotr Melekhov (Vladimir Gostyukhin), Darya Melekhova (Natalya Andreychenko), Pantelei Melekhov (F. Murray Abraham), Prokhor Zykov (Aleksandr Bespalyy, credited as Alexander Bespalis), Mikhail Koshevoy (Mikhail Vaskov), and Yesaul (Capt.) Ryabchikov (Anatoliy Guryev). The hooded front sights are removed from some carbines to make them look more like WWI era rifles.
Enfield Pattern 14
Austro-Hungarian (Hungarian Honved, judging by the headgears) soldiers are mostly armed with Enfield Pattern 14 rifles, instead of correct Mannlicher M1895s.
Muskets
Two antique muskets are seen on the wall in Gen. Lisnitskiy's house. They may be non-firing decorative "wall-hangers".
Shotguns
Single Barreled Shotgun
Young Grigoriy Melekhov (Rupert Everett) holds a Single Barreled Shotgun when he meets Stepan Astakhov in pre-war scene. This is most likely one of the Izhmekh models, like IZh-17 or IZh-18.
Double Barreled Shotgun
A Double Barreled Shotgun is seen on the wall in Gen. Lisnitskiy's house.
Machine Guns
Maxim M1910
Maxim M1910 machine guns are used by Russian Army in the WWI, and by Red and White troops in the Russian Civil War.
PK (visually modified to resemble MG34)
The machine guns, used by Austro-Hungarian troops, are PKs, visually modified to resemble MG34. Of course, neither MG34 nor PK is appropriate for the WWI era. With a certain degree of convention it may be a stand-in for Bergmann MG 15nA.
Other Weapons
F-1 Hand Grenade
Pantelei Melekhov (F. Murray Abraham) and Mikhail Koshevoy (Mikhail Vaskov) carry F-1 hand grenades in various scenes. These grenades may by a stand-in for French F1 or British Mills Bomb, both commonly used during the Russian Civil War.
Trivia
76.2 mm divisional gun model 1902
The 76.2 mm divisional gun model 1902 are used by Austro-Hungarian troops and by the Red Army.
Armoured Car (mockup)
A mockup of a destroyed armored car is seen in one scene.
Footage
Documentary footage of the Great War is used in the series.
