Sam Shepard with his son Jesse doing a little backyard target shooting. It appears that they are shooting a [[Smith & Wesson Model 586]] with the 6" barrel. The 586 was introduced in 1981 and Jesse was born in 1970. I place the photo at around 1982/83. Note the holster on Sam Shepard's right hand side. Shepard would have been 27 years old when this photos was taken and just starting to make himself known as a writer. Target Shooting
