The film was the feature debut of writer/director Ryan Coogler and was the first leading role for Michael B. Jordan, who portrayed Oscar Grant. The film was produced by actor/director Forest Whitaker and was done with the full cooperation of BART, who allowed filming at Fruitvale Station, where the actual shooting occurred, and even the precise location where Grant was shot. The names of the BART officers involved in the incident were changed, however.
