The film centers around a special unit created covertly by the US government and codenamed "Task Force X", aka the "Suicide Squad", which is comprised of notorious "meta-human" criminals and assigned to take on impossible missions in exchange for reduced sentences on their crimes. The film was written and directed by David Ayer and the cast included Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne. The film is also part of the DC Extended Universe, which includes Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman.
A standalone sequel, The Suicide Squad, directed by James Gunn was released both theatrically and on HBO MAX in August of 2021.
