The Taurus PT92 (and the similar PT99) is a Brazilian-made "Wonder Nine" based on the original Beretta 92.   In many action movies (particularly those made in Hong Kong), the Taurus PT92/PT99 has been used as a stand-in for the Beretta 92F when the Beretta is not available. Thus, the two guns are very often confused by moviegoers. The Taurus is distinguished from the Beretta by its frame-mounted safety, which it retains from the original Beretta 92, whereas the 92FS has its safety mounted on the slide. Even from a distance, this makes the two guns easy to tell apart.
The Taurus PT92 (and the similar PT99) is a Brazilian-made "Wonder Nine" based on the original Beretta 92. The PT92's story dates back to 1974, when Beretta won a contract to supply the Brazilian military with pistols. They built a factory in Sao Paulo and operated it until 1980, when they sold it to Taurus, who then started making very early original Taurus PT92s, as almost exact copies of the Beretta 92 (as the patents had expired), featuring the non-ambidextrous safety, round trigger guard and, most notably, the heel-mounted magazine releases and shiny plastic grips, but this design was quickly replaced by the current magazine catch location. Nonetheless, magazines for the Taurus PT92 often have cuts for both magazine releases. Despite the many design changes, such as the redesigned slide serrations, thickening of the trigger guard hook and addition of an accessory rail, the Taurus PT92 still retains many of the design elements from the original Beretta 92, such as the shape of the trigger and the location of the safety.

Newer-model PT92s and PT99s can also be told apart from the 92F because the cocking serrations at the rear of the slide are wider than those of the 92F (in order to improve grip on the slide while a round is being chambered). Both PT92s and PT99s now come standard with accessory rails since 2005.

The Taurus is distinguished from the Beretta by its frame-mounted safety, which it retains from the original Beretta 92, whereas the 92F/FS has its safety mounted on the slide. Taurus PT92AF - Earliest Model with no Decocker - 9x19mm. What distinguishes the earliest Taurus PT92AF pistols is the lack of a decocker and the markings on the slide are flipped from the later models of the PT92. The Markings Taurus PT92AF are on the opposite side of the slide.

In many action movies (particularly those made in Hong Kong), the Taurus PT92/PT99 has been used as a stand-in for the Beretta 92F/FS when the Beretta is not available. Thus, the two guns are very often confused by moviegoers. The Taurus is distinguished from the Beretta by its frame-mounted safety, which it retains from the original Beretta 92, whereas the 92F/FS has its safety mounted on the slide. Even from a distance, this makes the two guns easy to tell apart. Newer-model PT92s and PT99s can also be told apart from the 92F/FS because the cocking serrations at the rear of the slide are wider than those of the 92F/FS (in order to improve grip on the slide while a round is being chambered). Both PT92s and PT99s now come standard with accessory rails since 2005.

The Taurus PT92 and its variants appears in the following films and television series used by the following actors:

PT99

Same as the PT92, but with raised, adjustable sights for target shooters. In order to distinguish it from the PT92, look closely at the rear sight, and also at the front sight (which is taller than that of the PT92). The sights are the only difference between the two guns.
