Nice, but where's the trigger? This article or section is incomplete. You can help IMFDB by expanding it. |

Men of War (Russian: В тылу врага 2: Лис пустыни, or Behind Enemy Lines 2: Desert Fox) is a 2009 real-time strategy video game. Players issue orders to and/or take direct control of soldiers on a simulation-driven battlefield.
It is the sequel to Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2 (Behind Enemy Lines in Russian) and is technically a standalone expansion to "Faces of War" (Behind Enemy Lines 2 in Russian') re-using alot of the visual assets, however both mission design and weapon balancing has been massively overhauled compared to "Faces of War".
The game takes place during World War II (with the exception of the Vietnam expansion pack) and features battles set in Europe, the Soviet Union, Crete, and North Africa across three different campaigns for the Americans, Germans and Soviets. The Empire of Japan was later introduced as a multiplayer faction in a patch.
On November 1, 2009, a sequel called Men of War: Red Tide (Russian: "Черные бушлаты") was released, featuring missions centered on the Soviet Naval Infantry of the Black Sea Fleet, in addition to adding the arsenals of two more countries, Italy and Romania. This game notably featured no multiplayer or editor.
On February 25, 2011, a stand-alone expansion pack called Men of War: Assault Squad was released, featuring more small arms and high quality weapon models. The expansion pack focused on the multiplayer and infantry combat aspects of the game more.
On September 9, 2011, another stand-alone expansion called Men of War: Vietnam was released, featuring 2 campaigns focused on the Vietnam War (of the Vietcong and their Russian Advisors, and American Forces respectively) and featuring Vietnam War-era weapons though a healthy amount of the old World- War 2-Era weaponry returns.
On April 12, 2012, a sequel called Men of War: Condemned Heroes was released, featuring several campaigns focusing on the infamous Soviet "Penal battalions" and high quality human models.
On September 12, 2019, a standalone expansion for Assault Squad 2 (A 2014 remaster of the original Assault Squad with improved graphics, Steam Workshop support and using Steam servers instead of Gamespy.) called Men of War: Assault Squad 2 - Cold War bringing in elements of the Call to Arms version of the engine was released to heavily negative reception, due to an assortment of bugs, lack of overall content and complete lack of a proper single player campaign. (The single player just being bot matches and the game having a grand total of 5 maps used in both modes.)
While there is often overlap in firearm models, it is not uncommon for each individual game/expansion to introduce new models/sounds/textures for specific/all firearms.
Notably, the game fully depicts and has all machine guns in vehicles be usable, rear-mounted machine guns on Tank Turrets are usable by the AI/Player in addition to Hull/Coaxial/AA mountings depending on the tank.
It is not to be confused with the Perry Lang's action film Men of War.
The following weapons appear in the video game Men of War:
Men of War
Handguns
All pistols in the game use the same universal "Pistol Ammo", shared with SMGs.
Colt M1911A1
Luger P08
Nagant M1895
Nambu Type 14 (Hybrid)
The Nambu Type 14.
Tokarev TT-33
Walther P38
Welrod Mark I
Submachine Guns
All SMGs in-game use "Pistol Ammo" (which, essentially, is correct because most SMGs have pistol-caliber rounds).
M1A1 Thompson
The M1A1 Thompson is used by American soldiers and some British soldiers.
M3A1 "Grease Gun"
The M3A1 "Grease Gun" is used by US soldiers and incorrectly holds 32 rounds.
MP 40
This is the most common weapon used by German soldiers in the single-player campaign. In real life, the K98k was much more prevalent than the MP40.
MP 3008
The MP 3008, a German last-ditch weapon based on the British Sten Mk II is available.
Owen Mk. I
The Australian Owen Submachine Gun is used by British troops.
PPSh-41
Used by Soviet soldiers. It is fed with 71-round drum magazines instead of stick magazines.
PPS-43
Soviet shock troop members are equipped with PPS-43s.
Reising M50
SIG M1920
Japanese squads like the "Pioneers", "Scout", and the "SMG Gunners" are armed with the SIG Bergmann which is incorrectly named the "Type 100". It is only available in multiplayer or in the editor.
Sten Mk. V
The Sten Mk V, used by British soldiers, is incorrectly called "Sten Mk.1" in-game.
Shotgun
Double Barreled Shotgun
The "Shotgun" is a left-over from Faces of War (The second game in the MOW series before the name was branded to Men of War in English speaking countries) from the "Chicken Hunt" joke game mode where one player used a Shotgun to stop other players stealing their chickens, while it's not used in any official MOW content as the mode was not carried over, it can be placed/given to units in the editor and used for custom missions and uses "AT Rifle" ammo.
The weapon's functionality appears to change from game to game, it appears to crash the editor when fired in Men of War but is fully functional in at least Men of War: Vietnam
Rifles
All rifles in-game use the same "Rifle Ammo".
Arisaka Type 38
The Arisaka Type 38 appears incorrectly as the "Type 99" and is used by Imperial Japanese soldiers.
Arisaka Type 97
The scoped Arisaka is the Type 97 sniper rifle.
De Lisle Carbine
The De Lisle Carbine is used by the Allied Elite unit in multiplayer mode. It holds 7 rounds of "Rifle Ammo".
FG-42
The FG 42 is used by the Fallschirmjäger (German Paratroopers, hence the "FG" 42) in multiplayer mode. Like the STG-44, the FG-42 in game- is also classified as an SMG. It holds 20 rounds of "Pistol Ammo".
Karabiner 98k
The Karabiner 98k is used by German soldiers.
Karabiner 98k Scoped
Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk. I
Called "EM-3" in-game, the Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I is used by British Riflemen. It holds 10 Rounds of "Rifle Ammo" and the rate of fire is the same as other bolt action rifles. In Assault Squad a version of the Lee-Enfield firing exclusively rifle grenades is used by Assault Squad leaders, it has a fairly lenghty reload and like the M79 from Vietnam, it is fired upwards into the air for the grenade to arc downwards onto the target.
Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk. I (T)
The scoped Lee-Enfield appears as the "EM-2" in-game and holds 8 Rounds of "Rifle Ammo".
M1A1 Carbine
The M1A1 Carbine is used by US Soldiers. It holds 15 rounds, more than any other rifle-type weapon in Men of War.
M1 Garand
The M1 Garand is used by US soldiers in the game. It's a semi-automatic rifle, meaning the fire rate is higher than other bolt-action rifles, but it only holds 8 rounds of "Rifle ammo".
Mosin Nagant M1938
The Mosin Nagant M1938 is used by Soviet soldiers.
Mosin Nagant M38 w/ PU Scope
Springfield M1903A1
The M1903A1 Springfield. Both the scoped and unscoped rifles sport a front sight protector similar to the one on the M1917 Enfield.
M1903A1 w/ M84 Scope
The "M1903A4" in-game modeled with M1903A1 Rifle but is attached with the M1903A4 Springfield Sniper Rifle 's M84 scope.
Sturmgewehr 44
In Men of War, the STG-44 is classified as an SMG and called "MP-44", a popular misnomer. It holds 30 Rounds of "Pistol Ammo" and the range of the STG-44 is longer than other SMGs.
SVT-40
The SVT-40 is used by the Soviet elite unit in multiplayer mode and is also available in the editor.
Anti-Materiel Rifles
Boys Mk. I
The Boys Anti-Tank Rifle is used by British forces. All Anti-Tank Rifles in the game use the same "AT Rifle Ammo".
PTRD-41
Due to a bug, both the PTRD-41 and PTRS-41 use the same model (which is a PTRS-41).
PTRS-41
The PTRS-41 is carried by the Soviet tank hunter unit.
Panzerbüchse 39
The PzB-39 is used by German soldiers.
Type 97 anti-tank rifle
The Type 97 anti-tank rifle is called the "Anti-Tank Rifle" in the game.
Machine Guns
Most of the Machine Guns in the game use the "MG Ammo Belt", but large-caliber Machine Guns like the DShK or Browning M2 use another kind of "MG Ammo Belt".
Bren Mk. I
The Bren gun is used by British soldiers, and it holds 30-Round "MG Ammo Belt"s.
Browning Automatic Rifle
The M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle, called "B.A.R." in-game, is used by US soldiers. It is classified as a Machine Gun.
Browning M1919A4
The Browning M1919 is the standard heavy machine gun for U.S. forces.
Degtyaryov DP-27
The DP-27 is used by Soviet soldiers.
Degtyaryov DS-39
The Soviet Degtyaryov DS-39 mount on various platforms, and its anachronistic service is too long.
Maxim M1910
The Maxim M1910 is used by the Soviet Red Army.
MG 34
The MG34 is used by the German forces.
MG 42
The MG42 is used by German soldiers. It is modeled with a 50 Round drum but holds a 75-Round “MG Ammo Belt”s.
Nambu Type 96
The Type 96 light machine gun is used by the Japanese Machine Gunner and Parachuter units. Like the Arisaka rifle, it is incorrectly called the "Type 99".
Type 1 Heavy Machine Gun
The Type 1 Heavy Machine Gun is used by the Japanese forces and is incorrectly mounted on Japanese vehicles.
Vickers Mk. I
The Vickers is used by British forces.
Launchers
M1A1 "Bazooka"
The M1A1 "Bazooka" is used by US Forces, and (incorrectly) Soviet AT Soldiers use it in multiplayer mode.
Panzerfaust
Like the real-life version, the Panzerfaust is a disposable weapon by the "Sturmtruppen" in the game. When the Panzerfaust is fired, the user will drop the empty tube and pick up a new one.
Panzerschreck
German tank hunters are equipped with Panzerschrecks
PIAT
The PIAT, called "P.I.A.T." in the game, is used by British forces.
Type 4 70 mm AT Rocket Launcher
The Type 4 70 mm AT Rocket Launcher is used by Japanese units.

The LP-42 Flare Pistol is an usable flare gun.
Grenades & Explosives
AN/M8 HC smoke grenade
What appears to be an AN/M8 HC smoke grenade is the only smoke grenade for all factions in the game.
F-1 hand grenade
The F-1 hand grenade is the standard grenade for the Red Army.
Lunge Mine
Japanese soldiers have access to the Shitotsubakurai.
M26 hand grenade
The standard grenade for the U.S. Army is the anachronistic M26 hand grenade.
Mills Bomb
The Mills Bomb is used by British soldiers.
Model 24 Stielhandgranate
The Model 24 Stielhandgranate is used by German forces.
