The company was originally founded in 1878 as the John Moses and Matthew Sandefur Browning Company by legendary firearm designer and inventor John Moses Browning and his brother Matthew in Ogden, Utah, United States. In 1927, the year after the death of John Browning, the company was reorganized into the Browning Arms Company.
