'''''7.58 Minenwerfer''''' is a German 7.58cm infantry mortar. Put into service in 1909. Based on the experience of the Russo-Japanese War, in which Japanese artillery failed to successfully engage Russian defensive positions during the siege of Port Arthur, the German Empire developed the first plunging fire guns for close combat against dugouts. The Minenwerfer was originally intended for the sappers and was not issued to the infantry in modified form (''neuerer Art'') until the winter of 1916; each infantry brigade received two launchers. Later in the war, ''Minenwerfer-Kompanien'' were established and again placed under the command of the sappers of a division.

The launcher tube was adjustable in height and, from the new version of 1916, was installed on a bedding of the base plate that could be rotated through 360°. Previously it had only simple bedding that could be swiveled through a maximum of 70°. The recoil was absorbed by three hydraulic cylinders. Two wheels could be installed on the base plate, which allowed the crews to move the launcher at short distances. In the later ''neuerer Art'' version, a spar with an earth spur was included, which allowed almost horizontal, direct firing (flat trajectory firing). The light mine launcher of newer type could thus be used to engage tanks.
The maximum range of the light mine launcher of the old type was 1,050 meters. The successor model, i.e. the light mine launcher of the new type, on the other hand, had a maximum firing range of 1,300 meters.

Leichter Minenwerfer neuer Art - 75.8mm (2.99 in)

7.58 Minenwerfer is a German 7.58cm infantry mortar. Put into service in 1909. Based on the experience of the Russo-Japanese War, in which Japanese artillery failed to successfully engage Russian defensive positions during the siege of Port Arthur, the German Empire developed the first plunging fire guns for close combat against dugouts. The Minenwerfer was originally intended for the sappers and was not issued to the infantry in modified form (neuerer Art) until the winter of 1916; each infantry brigade received two launchers. Later in the war, Minenwerfer-Kompanien were established and again placed under the command of the sappers of a division.

In the later neuerer Art version, a spar with an earth spur was included, which allowed almost horizontal, direct firing (flat trajectory firing). The light mine launcher of newer type could thus be used to engage tanks.

The maximum range of the light mine launcher of the old type was 1,050 meters. The successor model, i.e. the light mine launcher of the new type, on the other hand, had a maximum firing range of 1,300 meters.
