James Whitmore was an American stage, film, and television actor. He was the father of actor and director [[James Whitmore Jr. ]] He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1950 for his debut role in the film ''[[Battleground]]'' and was also nominated for Best Actor in 1976 for his work ''Give'em Hell, Harry!'', a one man show. He is best known to younger audiences for his role of Brooks Hatlen in ''[[The Shawshank Redemption]]''.
