Later finally promuted Chief Warrant Officer, his commando, the number 24, whose the members are nicknamed '''The Black Tigers''' is one of the best unit of the war, even the Việt Minh command put a reward over Vanderberghe (a reward that Vanderberghe stole after pretending being captured, but the soldiers who claimed the reward were in fact his own). All the members of the commando are Vietnamese soldiers and ex Việt Minh soldiers, only the officers and NCOs are French.
