As far as I know, the official name of this revolver was Colt Model 1877 while "Thunderer", "Lightning" and "Rainmaker" were names for versions in different calibers (.41, .38 and .32 respectively). These names (or at least Thunderer and Lightning) were given not by Colt but by the seller of Colt revolvers Benjamin Kittredge (who is also the author of "Peacemaker" name for SAA). As far as I know, the official name of this revolver was Colt Model 1877 while "Thunderer", "Lightning" and "Rainmaker" were names for versions in different calibers (.41, .38 and .32 respectively). These names (or at least Thunderer and Lightning) were given not by Colt but by the seller of Colt revolvers Benjamin Kittredge (who is also the author of "Peacemaker" name for SAA).
