The story depicts the life and death of Robert Moussombe, the leader of some unnamed African state. The main character is a fictionalised depiction of Patrice Lumumba, and the events mostly follow the Congo Crisis in 1960s. Some other characters also have real life prototypes, like Dag Hammarskjold for John Bart, or Moise Tshombe for Jacques Loup.

Numerous Sturmgewehr 44 are seen in the movie. They are visually modified (in two different versions) in order to resemble more modern guns, used during the Congo Crisis. These mockups, made on Belarusfilm studios, are different from Mosfilm fake M16, often seen in Soviet movies.
