| ==RE: Far Cry==

| Your previous statement - "features a Car-15 buttstock, fixed carry handle and can fire in both semi-auto and full-auto meaning it is an M4A1 because M4s have safe/semi/burst trigger packs."
| |
| * Mentioning the 'Car-15' stock is at best a bit redundant and at worst inaccurate (M4s generally use the 'M4' 6-position stock, CAR-15-era carbines use the older 2/4-position Fiberlite stock (or even the coated aluminum stock, depending on how old they are). Granted the early run of M4/M4A1s had Fiberlite stocks but again, this is not common. That said, M727s use the Fiberlite stock of course, and that matches the weapon in the game so if that's what you were meaning to point out, you'd be right, and so my bad there.
| |
| * 'Fixed carry handle' is kind of a redundant mention since carry handles on practically every carbine prior to the Model 920/921s are fixed.
| |
| * Saying it is an 'M4A1' right after saying it's a M727 is contradictory, especially with the fixed carry handle and full auto remarks - The carry handle remark is absolutely contradictory to the M4A1 remark while the full auto remark is misleading as the M4A1 is not the only Colt AR carbine with a fullauto trigger group.
| |
|
| |
| All-told the phrasing of most of this was both not entirely correct and potentially misleading/confusing. When it comes to noting technical details on the guns themselves, need to be accurate and not contradictory. When in doubt, maybe sometimes better to not add stuff. A bit of advice I should've told myself a time or two, heh.
| |
| BTW, the Modern Warfare remark I removed because I don't feel it necessary to mention a different game - Though in the case of that one, I might have gone overboard on it, as it's also a legitimate mention of credit to this game itself, so.. eh. Put that back in if you like, I'm good on that part either way, ultimately.
| Anyway, hope this explains things a bit. StanTheMan (talk) 13:48, 1 June 2020 (EDT)

| : Except the Model 727 isn't an M4/M4A1 (which are Models 920/921). Hence why they're in different sections on the M16 page. The removable carry handle is the prime difference but there's other distinguishing features like the (typically) thicker forearm. Yes the trigger pack is the only difference between the M4 (920) and M4A1 (921) but since we're comparing them to a completely different weapon in the Colt catalog (727) that point is irrelevant. And government-standardized military designations have nothing to do with private mercenaries - They use whatever weapons they wish so that's kind of a moot point. As for the name 'M4 Assault Weapon' that's a generic name for the game, and not what we use to determine an ID of the actual weapon it's modeled after. I hope I too don't sound overly annoying but if we're gonna bother to include specific details they need to be correct and jive with other. As for myself, I check fairly regularly, most others don't so that explains the lack of response. Otherwise, no worries on my end. | :: From what I have found, the military disregards the Colt Model and catalog number and just gives it whatever designation that they want.
They do, but we don't, not necessarily - Otherwise we wouldn't have this.
| |
| :: Colt Model 723 was known as the CAR-15 in Delta Force even though that model was never officially adopted and thus never had an "M" or "XM" designation. Even though Delta Force called it a CAR-15, it is more accurately described as an M16A2 Carbine or "M16 shorty".
Indeed, which is why we don't ID those as "CAR-15"s. Well that and the fact we already use that term to denote the civilian Colt carbines that take after the XM177-style guns, both of which are markedly different from the Model 723 and it's related set of carbines.
| |
| :: PMCs would have the same small arms licences to acquire these rifles and would give them the same designation. It would make sense so there is no confusion for the mostly former military mercs that make up most PMCs.
I'm also sure they use the common model names/numbers, but once we again, that's not necessarily what we do since we're looking to be as discriminating on our IDs as possible.
| |
| :: Also, I'm wondering why there is a picture of the M4A1 from Far Cry Classic in the M727 section from the original game?
Because as the description notes it's simply the original game's world model (which is that of a 727) with the railed handguard crudely slapped on.

..Are we having fun yet? ;P StanTheMan (talk) 23:58, 2 June 2020 (EDT)
