Cruelty (Zhestokost) is a Soviet 1959 drama movie directed by Vladimir Skuybin and based on the novel by Pavel Nilin. The movie is set in 1920s in a small Siberian town. Local Ugolovny Rozysk (criminal police) hunts for the gang of brigands, lead by Vorontsov who claims himself "Emperor of taiga". Chief of Ugolovny Rozysk Yefrem Yefremovich and young, honest Deputy Chief Veniamin Malyshev differ in the methods of struggle against brigands. Malyshev convincies arrested brigand Lazar Baukin to change sides and help to capture Vorontsov. But after the victory Malyshev, betrayed by his superior and by his beloved woman, commits suicide.
