Blue Thunder is the 1984 television adaptation of the 1983 film. The series was not a continuation of the film, but instead followed a special unit within the Los Angeles Police Department that used the helicopter to fight crime. The cast starred James Farentino, Dana Carvey, as well as former NFL stars Dick Butkus and Bubba Smith. The series was broadcast in competition with the similarly themed Airwolf and only aired for 11 episodes in the US on ABC.

As in the film, the M61 Vulcan is the main weapon of the Blue Thunder helicopter.

A P9S is the sidearm carried by Blue Thunder's pilot, Frank Chaney (James Farentino). The pistol is used by Wonderlove (Dana Carvey) in "Godchild" (S1E10).

The Heckler & Koch VP70 is the service pistol carried by "Ski" Butowski (Dick Butkus) and "Bubba" Kelsey (Bubba Smith) in the series.
