The story reconstructs the Gleiwitz incident, a covert Nazi German attack on the radio station in the German town of Gleiwitz near the Polish border on the night of August 31, 1939. It can be a 98k that got a Gewehr 98 bolt when underwent post-war repair or maybe a Gewehr 98 that was shortened to carbine length in early 1930s.
