In 1864 Russian Imperial Navy corvette ''Bogatyr'' during the voyage in Atlantic saves an African boy, the only survivor from sunken slave ship. The boy is adopted by the crew and named Maksimka (diminutive from the name Maksim or Maxim). He especially befriends with sailor Luchkin and helps to save his friend when Luchkin was shanghaied.
