Anna Mauth, a nurse from Dresden who is promised to surgeon Alexander Wenninger, falls in love with Robert Newman, a downed British bomber pilot who has sought refuge in the hospital where she works. When the ''Gestapo'' raids the hospital, Anna risks everything to save Robert's life and hides him in the catacombs of the ''Frauenkirche'' church.
