It is noteworthy that the U.S. government had a ban on all weapons imported from Warsaw Pact nations during the Cold War years (1947-1989). Communist nations which were not part of the Warsaw pact, such as Yugoslavia and Mainland China, were allowed to negotiate trade agreements with the U.S., thus the influx of Chinese AK type rifles and Yugo AKs (Zastava). The Maadi ARMs (the US version of the MISR) were allowed because Egypt was never a Communist country nor a member of the Warsaw Pact. But, as a result of this, virtually no U.S. movie has a real original AK-47 prior to a certain date. The exceptions are, custom build ups after the mid 1990s when original AK-47 rifle kits were available (as was done on "We Were Soldiers", using original blueprints and US made milled receivers), and movies filmed overseas where foreign movie armorers had no such restrictions. This is particularly true for films made in Israel and some parts of Europe. This is not the case now, with the current crop of films made outside the U.S., mostly in the newly democratic Eastern European nations (Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Poland,Czech Republic, etc.) However, Russia has firmly blocked the export of their old AK-47 surplus guns outside of the country, having distributed most of them to client nations and guerillas throughout the world in the previous five decades. So the AK-47 one 'thinks' one sees may very well be a Poly Technologies Legend series AK (from China) or another AK Variant.

The improved version of the AK-47, featuring a number of refinements such as a stamped receiver (as opposed to the milled receiver of the original AK-47), a slant compensator on the tip of the barrel (to reduce recoil), an improved gas tube (without vents), and use of lighter materials to reduce weight and simplify construction.

Most of the AKMs seen in Hollywood movies are actually Egyptian Maadi MISR copies, which were sold in the U.S. as the ARM in the 1980s - such weapons were first procured by Stembridge Gun Rentals for ''[[Red Dawn]]'' and subsequently re-used in numerous other motion pictures. The Maadi is almost identical to the original Soviet-built AKM, save for the markings, and is nearly impossible to tell apart.

==MPi-KM/MPi-KMS-72==

The MPi-KM/MPi-KMS-72 are East German license-manufactured versions of the AKM/AKMS. Early versions of the rifles had wooden furniture, but later models have distinctive stippled brown buttstocks and pistol grips. The MPi-KMS also has a side folding single strut "coat hanger" stock, a feature which is shared with the Romanian AIMS rifle. After the German reunification, all variants of the MPi were removed from service, with most rifles being sold as surplus to the militaries of such countries as Finland and Turkey.

Note: The chance of seeing a 100% original East German MPi-K series of rifle in a movie or television show is extremely unlikely. Most of the "East German" AKs that are seen in visual media are regular AKMs using East German Parts kits.

Chopped and shortened version of the AKM, made to resemble the [[AKS-74U]] except that it is still a 7.62x39mm gun. The AKMSU was never manufactured by the Soviet Union; however, many other countries, including Yugoslavia, built their own versions.

Most of the so-called "AKMSU" carbines seen in Hollywood movies, such as ''[[Three Kings]]'', ''[[Tropic Thunder]]'', ''[[Bad Boys II]]'', etc. are actually full-size AK variants that have been converted with Krinkov parts kits; many feature side-folding [[AKS-74U]]-style stocks. The Chinese Type 56 rifle (manufactured by China North Industries Corporation, or Norinco) is by far the most commonly-seen AK derivative in Hollywood productions, both film and television. They are frequently seen impersonating Russian weapons in many films, since the Russians never sold a civilian AK model in the U.S. (or Europe) during the latter half of the 20th century. Most of the movie prop rental houses in Hollywood had dozens if not hundreds of Chinese AKs - mostly the Type 56s (7.62x39mm version) or the similar [[AK-47#Norinco Type 84S|Type 84s]] (5.56x45mm version). These were usually semi-automatic civilian versions (commonly designated "AK47S" or "AKS47" by the importers), in many cases converted to full-auto by Class III manufacturers.

There are three main variants of the Type 56 - the standard Type 56, which has a fixed stock, the Type 56-1, which has an under-folding stock, and the Type 56-2, which has a side-folding stock. Most fixed-stock Type 56 rifles have an under-folding spike bayonet, known as the "pig sticker"; this rifle is often seen in movies about the Vietnam War, and is correct for NVA throughout most of the conflict. Quite a few of the Type 56s seen in movies also have [[AK-47#AKM|AKM]]-style slant compensators fitted; this was a common feature on semi-auto Type 56s exported to the U.S., but NOT the full-auto military model.

The easiest way to tell when an AK-type rifle seen in a movie or TV show is a Chinese Type 56 is by looking at the front sight; Chinese AKs have a distinctive full-circle ("hooded") front sight that no other AKs (including those made in Russia) have.

The Type 84 rifle is nearly identical to the Chinese Type 56 (seen above), but it is chambered in 5.56x45mm /.223 Remington. It is often seen impersonating the [[AK-74]] in movies and TV shows (particularly ''[[Stargate: SG1]]'', where it is carried by Russian SG teams).

The Type 84 was imported and sold with an AK birdcage flash hider and had a deep polished factory blue. Several other variants of the 84S Rifle (that are mostly unfamiliar to American Gun Owners) were victims of the 1989 Import Ban that barred most new 'assault rifles' from entering the United States. These rifles were thus mostly exported to Canada and Australia, and as a result, appeared in television shows or movies that were filmed in those countries. Listed here are two of the variants seen in Canadian or Australian television (the Target and the Match versions). If it were not for Canadian or Australian movie armorers, most of us in the U.S. would never have known these variants existed.

==Zastava M70==

The Zastava M70 was the Yugoslavian variant of the Russian AK-47 (later AKM), however, it utilized a strengthened lower receiver, more akin to the RPK than the AK-47/AKM. It also has other design variations which make it immediately recognizable from it's Russian cousin. Some of the variants also have finned barrels to aid in heat dispersion. It was made by Zavodi Crvena Zastava (Red Banner Plant), now Zastava Oružje / Zastava Arms in a Yugoslavian (now Serbian) city of Kragujevac.
It was most widely used and seen in the Wars in the 1990s of the former Yugoslavian republics - Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro (Slovenia and Macedonia were not a major combatants in the fighting). Yugoslavia also sold them to many countries such as Iraq (which produced a licensed copy known as the Tabuk, which lacked the grenade-launching sight) and Kuwait.

The Zastava M70 was produced in the following variants:

:No, we would have to convert it ourselves, and that takes time. To convert an image from PNG to JPEG, just open the image in a program like MSPaint and re-save it in JPEG format. If you don't, I'm afraid I will have to enforce the rules and delete the images. Also, no offense, but you got many of the guns wrong. Great work on all the screencaps and contributions you've so far, but I must insist that you try to follow format:

*(1.) Always include gun pictures along with the screencaps from the movie.
*(2.) Always make sure you link to the gun pages.

If you want to save time, you can just go to a page for another movie in which the same gun appears, and copy and paste the code from that page to save time. If I'm doing a page for a movie that has a SIG-Sauer P226, for example, I will just go to a page that has the same gun (like ''[[Air Force One]]''), copy the entry, and then change the code as needed. It's a good habit to get into, and it's important for this site's completeness and cohesion.

I have always used .PNGs in lieu of .Jpegs because, while they are bigger, they are of superior quality, especially when it comes to thumbnails. Therefore, identifying guns is easier as the images are clearer. Since the rules, standards and principles insists on space conserving .jpeg images, the Carlito's way page will probably be the last one I do using .PNGs. I decided this yesterday before you sent me this and just didn't think it was worth announcing, and the only reason the Carlito's Way images are .PNGs is because I was halfway done with doing them all when I picked up my work yesterday. Thanks for asking ahead of time :) But I hate those pages. There is little we can identify other than 'flintlock pistol, 'flintlock musket', 'flintlock blunderbuss', etc. It's crap. And if we cannot identify what make, model of pistol (which is hard since so many are custom), then it is a complete waste of IMFDB server space to have the page. I'm going to go on a deletion spree for all the lame pages with no screencaps on them. It's a part of the rules and standards, that bad pages are NOT better than no pages at all. The rifle you see in this picture is the exact same one that was used in ''[[The Interpreter]]''. I got the picture from the web site of Weapons Specialists, Ltd. in New York, which is the company that supplied the weapons to the production. So it's a safe bet that this exact gun is the one from the movie. You can see it's the same configuration and everything. This same gun was also used in ''[[Lord of War]]'' (another movie for which Weapons Specialists supplied guns).

::I checked the page edit history. You were the one who changed the "Category: Movie | Batman 2" etc to just "Category:Movie". Don't do that. the Batman 2,3,4, etc. was done intentionally so that the titles sorted by their cinematic order, not by pure alphabetical order. We did the same thing to the blade Series of movies. Done purely by alphabetical sorting, Blade Trinity would be listed AHEAD of the first Blade movie rather than third. Hey there. Glad to see how much work you've done on the page. :) I had some pics of some of the background muskets (used by civilians and indians) that were 'rescued' from the production by one of the gunsmiths I knew who worked on the picture. As you know, the vast majority of the guns were destroyed during the filming (the stuntmen pretty much used their muskets as clubs in most of the fight scenes) and over 400 Brown Bess muskets were destroyed. I have a pic of two background guns. Is there any screenshot which may have these in them? I know they were for background people. One is a modern repro of a common commercial flintlock firearm of the time period, the other is known as a trade gun, i.e. a lesser quality flintlock that had less parts and craftsmanship, developed specifically for trade with the Indians (i.e. they let the 'locals' get the more cheaply made muskets). Anyway, just wondering if you thought we should add this to your excellent page.

::Actually those were real firing muskets (modern replicas) of civilian muskets, so they were issued to the Colonists volunteers to represent 'private purchase' weapons of the civilians. The Trade muskets were issued to allied Indians to the British Army as they were the 18th century equivalent of 'lend lease' to friendly Indian tribes. They were indeed fired. All non-firing guns were rubber. The reason why so many guns were destroyed was that after 2 weeks of filming a lot of the actors and stuntmen and background extras were really banging on each other with the guns as clubs during the many days of 'hand to hand fighting' filming. I suspect the filmmakers expected this since the production '''purchased''' the muskets, they didn't rent the majority of them, except for select hero guns. Thanks. I noticed that you changed the template for [[The American]]. That template has an interesting history. I've never used it because I was one of the early ones who didn't like that formatting change. Some users created a template that had the poster line BELOW the summary line amongst other slight changes. There was no consensus. I think just one person came up with it and used it. But I always did it the way that Bunni did it. The majority of the site was Bunni's way. But ever since one of the Mods made their own 'user's template' people have started changing pages to conform with it, which I never agreed with. Just letting you know, as a mod, I've always been changing them back to the original style from when the site first began. I still think the poster should be aligned top most and to the upper rightmost corner of the page to start with, which means the poster image line should be first on the page, just because that's the way 90% of the site was when it first started and I thought it looked best. If we did that 24 would be at 234 and Miami Vice would be at 195 currently with a season and a half to go. It's a good habit to get into, and it's important for this site's completeness and cohesion.

I have always used .PNGs in lieu of .Jpegs because, while they are bigger, they are of superior quality, especially when it comes to thumbnails. Therefore, identifying guns is easier as the images are clearer. Since the rules, standards and principles insists on space conserving .jpeg images, the Carlito's way page will probably be the last one I do using .PNGs. I decided this yesterday before you sent me this and just didn't think it was worth announcing, and the only reason the Carlito's Way images are .PNGs is because I was halfway done with doing them all when I picked up my work yesterday. Thanks for asking ahead of time :) But I hate those pages. There is little we can identify other than 'flintlock pistol, 'flintlock musket', 'flintlock blunderbuss', etc. It's crap. We can offer no other information other than what is completely obvious to the audience. Gee. Jack Sparrow uses a flintlock pistol. So what? They didn't need US to tell them that. And if we cannot identify what make, model of pistol (which is hard since so many are custom), then it is a complete waste of IMFDB server space to have the page. I'm going to go on a deletion spree for all the lame pages with no screencaps on them. It's a part of the rules and standards, that bad pages are NOT better than no pages at all. Lame pages, especially lots of them, makes us look bad. Good thing you're trying to fix a bunch of the bad existing pages. The rifle you see in this picture is the exact same one that was used in ''[[The Interpreter]]''. I got the picture from the web site of Weapons Specialists, Ltd. in New York, which is the company that supplied the weapons to the production. So it's a safe bet that this exact gun is the one from the movie. You can see it's the same configuration and everything. This same gun was also used in ''[[Lord of War]]'' (another movie for which Weapons Specialists supplied guns).

Hey there. Glad to see how much work you've done on the page. :) I had some pics of some of the background muskets (used by civilians and indians) that were 'rescued' from the production by one of the gunsmiths I knew who worked on the picture. As you know, the vast majority of the guns were destroyed during the filming (the stuntmen pretty much used their muskets as clubs in most of the fight scenes) and over 400 Brown Bess muskets were destroyed. I have a pic of two background guns. Is there any screenshot which may have these in them? I know they were for background people. One is a modern repro of a common commercial flintlock firearm of the time period, the other is known as a trade gun, i.e. a lesser quality flintlock that had less parts and craftsmanship, developed specifically for trade with the Indians (i.e. they let the 'locals' get the more cheaply made muskets). Anyway, just wondering if you thought we should add this to your excellent page.

::Actually those were real firing muskets (modern replicas) of civilian muskets, so they were issued to the Colonists volunteers to represent 'private purchase' weapons of the civilians. The Trade muskets were issued to allied Indians to the British Army as they were the 18th century equivalent of 'lend lease' to friendly Indian tribes. They were indeed fired. All non-firing guns were rubber. The reason why so many guns were destroyed was that after 2 weeks of filming a lot of the actors and stuntmen and background extras were really banging on each other with the guns as clubs during the many days of 'hand to hand fighting' filming. I suspect the filmmakers expected this since the production '''purchased''' the muskets, they didn't rent the majority of them, except for select hero guns. Thanks. I noticed that you changed the template for [[The American]]. That template has an interesting history. I've never used it because I was one of the early ones who didn't like that formatting change. Some users created a template that had the poster line BELOW the summary line amongst other slight changes. There was no consensus. I think just one person came up with it and used it. But I always did it the way that Bunni did it. The majority of the site was Bunni's way. I'm going to wrap up season four of Vice probably next week. Then I'll get started on season five. When that gets finished we'll be able to do an accurate count on the total number of different guns used. You can go ahead do a count on 24 if you want and see where it's at. Also don't just add the number of guns per season together. A Beretta 92FS counts once not eight times. If we did that 24 would be at 234 and Miami Vice would be at 195 currently with a season and a half to go. VLC never made it darker for me. Are you sure that you have the video effects off? It might also simply be your screen.
