The [[Beretta 92F]] features prominently in the film as the sidearm of Detective John McClane ([[Bruce Willis]]). At one point, Hans Gruber ([[Alan Rickman]]) is seen holding the Beretta. Karl ([[Alexander Godunov]]) gets ahold of it during a fight near the end of the film as well. Another Beretta can also be seen being carried by one of the SWAT officers involved in the ill-fated raid on the Nakatomi Building. It is worth noting that the main character in the book "Nothing Lasts Forever", on which the movie is based, carries a Browning HiPower rather than the Beretta 92F.

==Heckler & Koch P7M13==
Hans Gruber ([[Alan Rickman]]) carries a hard chromed [[Heckler & Koch P7M13]] as his main weapon, notably using it to threaten Joseph Takagi (James Shigeta) and Harry Ellis (Hart Bochner), and then brandishing it at the climax of the film, holding McClane's wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) at gunpoint. When he first brings out the weapon while threatening Takagi, he is shown removing a matching suppressor from the barrel, thus indicating it's not a P7M13SD because there is no threaded barrel to use a suppressor. (The threads to attach the suppressor were actually inside the barrel of the gun, as there were no live rounds fired out of it.) According to the script, Hans was supposed to carry a Walther (likely a [[PPK]], but it's not specifically identified) It is assumed that the P7M13 was used in place of this, as it bears resemblance to a Walther PPK, and both firearms are German, like Hans himself.

At the end of the film, McClane finally gets to meet Sergeant Al Powell ([[Reginald VelJohnson]]) in person and is introducing him to his wife when Powell has to pull his [[Smith & Wesson Model 15]]. He is seen firing 5 rounds. The Model 15 was the standard sidearm of the LAPD from 1971 to 1988.

Another frequently-seen weapon in the film is the [[Heckler & Koch HK94]]s chopped and converted to look like [[Heckler & Koch MP5A3|MP5A3]]s. The [[Heckler & Koch MP5]] was often considered the Rolls Royce of submachine guns when it was first widely introduced to the market in the late 1970s/early 1980s, and are used primarily by Gruber's men (and occasionally Gruber himself). McClane manages to commandeer one from one of the terrorists, Tony Vreski ([[Andreas Wisniewski]]), informing his comrades of this by leaving a note on Tony's corpse saying "Now I have a machine gun. Ho Ho Ho.". At one point, McClane extends the stock hoping to use it as an anchor so he can descend down the ventilation shaft via the sling, though the sling doesn't support his weight for long, soon coming undone and sending him falling into the shaft before he catches himself on the opening of an air vent. He then procures another MP5 from another slain terrorist, using it until he runs out of ammunition during a gun battle with Karl. He then procures yet another MP5 from a terrorist on the roof, firing it into the air to scare the hostages brought up. He discards it when it runs out of ammunition before the final battle with Hans. By the way, in the book "Nothing Lasts Forever", on which the movie is based, the main character first uses a Thompson Submachine Gun and later an AK47. Fun fact: In the book, the note reads "Now ''we'' have a machine gun", in order to confuse the terrorists.

==Steyr AUG==
One of the more unusual weapons (for the time) in the film, the [[Steyr AUG]] assault rifle is used by Karl ([[Alexander Godunov]]) throughout the movie. It was likely chosen as the writers wanted to contrast the terrorists' exotic European weapons with the more traditional American firearms used by the LAPD. Being bullpup in design, the AUG features a decent barrel length in a compact design, and is also fitted with an integrated scope. The AUG is fired repeatedly by Karl during his personal mission to get revenge against McClane after he killed the first terrorist, who happened to be Karl's brother. In a memorable scene at the end of the film, a revived Karl emerges from a body bag with his AUG in hand for one last-ditched attempt to kill McClane (which begs the question why he was wrapped up inside a body bag alongside his gun).

The SG 552 was the shortest version of the 55x-family. Apart from the charging handle (round, steel), externally it appeared to be a shorter version of its bigger brothers, the SG 550 and 551. However, internally, the SG 552 featured several major differences: the gas piston was fixed to bolt (like on a classic AK47) and the recoil spring was located behind the bolt (like on an MP5) instead of in the gas tube. While SIG claims these changes were necessary for technical reasons on this extremly compact assault rifle, they led to certain reliability issues - unusual for the company. To address this, the SG 552 was updated, resulting in the SG 552. Externally, it can be distinguished from its predecessor by its charging handle (flat lack plastic) like on the SG 550 and SG 551. Internally, the SG 553 features a separate gas piston and a recoil spring located in front of the bolt, within the gas tube, again like on the SG 550 and SG 551.

The SIG SG 552 is also known as the '''Commando''', while its successor, the SIG SG 553, is known as the '''SOW''', short for '''Special Operations Weapon'''.

I can't believe it took me so long to notice, but neither of these weapons are actually the SG 553. One way to tell is that the 553 is also fitted with a Brugger & Thomet (same company that makes the rail systems I believe) flash hider that allows for quick mounting of a suppressor. The other much more obvious way to tell is that the gun has SG 552-2 written on the side. I didn't realise this version existed, but apparently it does, and as far as I can tell the SG 552-2 is a flat top version of the 552 with folding BUIS, sa appart from the bolt and flash hider (although that can be switched) is identical to the 553. For example, one can be seen in [[The Unit]] before the 553 was released in 2009 (also has the 552 type charging handle). Below is the only non airsoft picture I can find of a 553, which is the semi auto version.

I'd like to add my 5 cents to this: the designations "-1" and "-2" on the 55x series rifles have nothing to do with the sights. Rather, they refer to the ammunition the gun was designed for. "-1"-rifles are designed for 5.6mm Swiss (known to us as the "Gw Pat 90" or simply "GP90"), while "-2"-rifles are designed for 5.56×45mm NATO. While these two calibers are very similar, GP90 uses a 63gr bullet with a 1:10" barrell twist rate while 5.56×45mm NATO (originally) uses(/d) a 55gr bullet, requiring a 1:7" or 1:9" barrell twist rate. Of course, NATO has since discovered that 55gr is far to light and now (to my knowledge predominantely) uses much heavier bullets (62 to 77gr). In addition, I'd like to note the following on the 552 vs 553 discussion:

- The difference between these two guns is mostly internal (552: gas piston fixed to bolt, main spring behind bolt, 553: separate gas piston, main spring in front of the bolt). Yet, they are still different guns - which is why I'd suggest to list them as such. Rather, long- and short-barrel version should be distinguised (available for 551, 552 and 553). By the way, the 552 ceased production in 2008, the design was - by Swiss standards - faulty.
- The flash hiders are not charateristic to the 552 and 553 versions - both the standard Swiss flash hider (as found on the standard issue SIG 550) as well as the Rotex flash hider could/can be ordered for either rifle. For both versions, Brügger&Thomet builds supressors, although it is said that the Rotex versions "fit better". Rotex equipped guns are however known to be VERY loud unsuppressed (and are therefore referred to as "tuning forks" in Switzerland).
- Also, both versions could/can be ordered flat-top or with fixed iron sights.

:I have a couple of quick points/questions. Firstly, I don't think it is really necessary to add on to pages that it is a short barrel version of the 551/552/553, as the short barrel is the standard version with the LB being the variant (and as far as I know none of these long barrel version have appeared in anything anyway). Also, are you sure that they make a version of the 553 with fixed iron sights, as I have never seen one and to be honest I can't really understand why they would bother. The closest I can find are US "pistol" versions that have fixed sights and label themselves as the 553, but they clearly aren't as they have the 551-A1 lower and I would guess the upper is cobbled from another variant. About the flash hiders you say that you can order either the Rotex or the standard 550 flash hider for the 553, but I do not think that either of these were available on the 552 were they? I think all the 552s had that open pronged flash hider with the tapered back (distinct from the pronged Rotex which is ribbed and has a nut at the back) and this is not used on the current 553, which means that if it appears that is indicative of the earlier 552 is it not? Last thing about the flash hider, on a number of pages you have stated that it has a Rotex flash hider, but it all cases it clearly has the standard 552 one, which isn't a Rotex is it? From what I found out, there are four factory flash hiders for the 55x-series: standard, the four-pronged (useless, therefore to my knowledge no longer available), the threed-pronged (replacment for the useless one) and the Rotex one (which makes sense if you want to use a silencer). Note quite certain which version was/is available for which gun - I'll do some more research and update the respective pages accordingly once I find out more.

I unfortunately failed to find out much more about the flash hiders. A 2008 Swiss Arms catalogue I found only mentions the three-pronged one. Famous Swiss gun maker Brügger&Thomet apparently offered shortened versions as well (cut-down 550s, I suppose, which were equipped with Rotex flash hiders. == SG552/556 uppers ==

Does anyone know if the uppers for, say, an SG552 and a SG556 pistol are interchangeable? I ask because was looking at the SG553 in [[Salt]], and realised that the upper on it is identical to that of the [http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDetails/p556-swat.aspx SG556 SWAT pistol], which has a different front sight and flash hider to the SG553. Furthermore, the gun in Salt has a jet black upper, but the lower is the regualr SIG grey implying that it is built from two different guns. Below is a shot of the gun from the [http://www.thespecialistsltd.com/ The Specialists Ltd's] website, who supplied the guns for this film, and they list it as an SG552, which from the charging handle it definitely isn't. The uppers of the two guns look the same shape, but are there less obvious differences that would make swapping them a no go? :*Short barrel: 365mm (14in) barrel, total length 870mm, total weight 3.82kg without magazine

Also, SG 750 is the full auto version, SG 751 is the civilian semi auto version. When it was initially designed back in 2005 it seemed to go by either SAPR (Swiss Arms Precision Rifle) for the long barrel version or SAPK (Swiss Arms Precision Kurz?) for the short barrel. I think this distinction has been abandoned and all are now called the SAPR, as there are 5 different barrel lengths available. I can't believe it took me so long to notice, but neither of these weapons are actually the SG 553. One way to tell is that the 553 is also fitted with a Brugger & Thomet (same company that makes the rail systems I believe) flash hider that allows for quick mounting of a suppressor. The other much more obvious way to tell is that the gun has SG 552-2 written on the side. I didn't realise this version existed, but apparently it does, and as far as I can tell the SG 552-2 is a flat top version of the 552 with folding BUIS, sa appart from the bolt and flash hider (although that can be switched) is identical to the 553. For example, one can be seen in [[The Unit]] before the 553 was released in 2009 (also has the 552 type charging handle). Below is the only non airsoft picture I can find of a 553, which is the semi auto version.

I'd like to add my 5 cents to this: the designations "-1" and "-2" on the 55x series rifles have nothing to do with the sights. Rather, they refer to the ammunition the gun was designed for. "-1"-rifles are designed for 5.6mm Swiss (known to us as the "Gw Pat 90" or simply "GP90"), while "-2"-rifles are designed for 5.56×45mm NATO. While these two calibers are very similar, GP90 uses a 63gr bullet with a 1:10" barrell twist rate while 5.56×45mm NATO (originally) uses(/d) a 55gr bullet, requiring a 1:7" or 1:9" barrell twist rate. Of course, NATO has since discovered that 55gr is far to light and now (to my knowledge predominantely) uses much heavier bullets (62 to 77gr). In addition, I'd like to note the following on the 552 vs 553 discussion:

- The difference between these two guns is mostly internal (552: gas piston fixed to bolt, main spring behind bolt, 553: separate gas piston, main spring in front of the bolt). Yet, they are still different guns - which is why I'd suggest to list them as such. Rather, long- and short-barrel version should be distinguised (available for 551, 552 and 553). By the way, the 552 ceased production in 2008, the design was - by Swiss standards - faulty.
- The flash hiders are not charateristic to the 552 and 553 versions - both the standard Swiss flash hider (as found on the standard issue SIG 550) as well as the Rotex flash hider could/can be ordered for either rifle. For both versions, Brügger&Thomet builds supressors, although it is said that the Rotex versions "fit better". Rotex equipped guns are however known to be VERY loud unsuppressed (and are therefore referred to as "tuning forks" in Switzerland).
- Also, both versions could/can be ordered flat-top or with fixed iron sights.

:I have a couple of quick points/questions. Firstly, I don't think it is really necessary to add on to pages that it is a short barrel version of the 551/552/553, as the short barrel is the standard version with the LB being the variant (and as far as I know none of these long barrel version have appeared in anything anyway). Also, are you sure that they make a version of the 553 with fixed iron sights, as I have never seen one and to be honest I can't really understand why they would bother. The closest I can find are US "pistol" versions that have fixed sights and label themselves as the 553, but they clearly aren't as they have the 551-A1 lower and I would guess the upper is cobbled from another variant. About the flash hiders you say that you can order either the Rotex or the standard 550 flash hider for the 553, but I do not think that either of these were available on the 552 were they? I think all the 552s had that open pronged flash hider with the tapered back (distinct from the pronged Rotex which is ribbed and has a nut at the back) and this is not used on the current 553, which means that if it appears that is indicative of the earlier 552 is it not? Last thing about the flash hider, on a number of pages you have stated that it has a Rotex flash hider, but it all cases it clearly has the standard 552 one, which isn't a Rotex is it? From what I found out, there are four factory flash hiders for the 55x-series: standard, the four-pronged (useless, therefore to my knowledge no longer available), the threed-pronged (replacment for the useless one) and the Rotex one (which makes sense if you want to use a silencer). Note quite certain which version was/is available for which gun - I'll do some more research and update the respective pages accordingly once I find out more.

I unfortunately failed to find out much more about the flash hiders. A 2008 Swiss Arms catalogue I found only mentions the three-pronged one. Famous Swiss gun maker Brügger&Thomet apparently offered shortened versions as well (cut-down 550s, I suppose, which were equipped with Rotex flash hiders. Anyway, I did update the pages I edited accordingly.

Does anyone know if the uppers for, say, an SG552 and a SG556 pistol are interchangeable? I ask because was looking at the SG553 in [[Salt]], and realised that the upper on it is identical to that of the [http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDetails/p556-swat.aspx SG556 SWAT pistol], which has a different front sight and flash hider to the SG553. Furthermore, the gun in Salt has a jet black upper, but the lower is the regualr SIG grey implying that it is built from two different guns. Below is a shot of the gun from the [http://www.thespecialistsltd.com/ The Specialists Ltd's] website, who supplied the guns for this film, and they list it as an SG552, which from the charging handle it definitely isn't. The uppers of the two guns look the same shape, but are there less obvious differences that would make swapping them a no go? Also, SG 750 is the full auto version, SG 751 is the civilian semi auto version. When it was initially designed back in 2005 it seemed to go by either SAPR (Swiss Arms Precision Rifle) for the long barrel version or SAPK (Swiss Arms Precision Kurz?) for the short barrel. I think this distinction has been abandoned and all are now called the SAPR, as there are 5 different barrel lengths available. The SG 552 was the shortest version of the 55x-family. Apart from the charging handle (round, steel), externally it appeared to be a shorter version of its bigger brothers, the SG 550 and 551. However, internally, the SG 552 featured several major differences: the gas piston was fixed to bolt (like on a classic AK47) and the recoil spring was located behind the bolt (like on an MP5) instead of in the gas tube. While SIG claims these changes were necessary for technical reasons on this extremly compact assault rifle, they led to certain reliability issues - unusual for the company. To address this, the SG 552 was updated, resulting in the SG 552. Externally, it can be distinguished from its predecessor by its charging handle (flat lack plastic) like on the SG 550 and SG 551. Internally, the SG 553 features a separate gas piston and a recoil spring located in front of the bolt, within the gas tube, again like on the SG 550 and SG 551.

The SIG SG 552 is also known as the '''Commando''', while its successor, the SIG SG 553, is known as the '''SOW''', short for '''Special Operations Weapon'''.

The latest generation of the SIG 550 rifle series. Due to import restrictions by the BATF, SIG builds these new version rifles in the United States. The SG 552 was the shortest version of the 55x-family. Apart from the charging handle (round, steel), externally it appeared to be a shorter version of its bigger brothers, the SG 550 and 551. However, internally, the SG 552 featured several major differences: the gas piston was fixed to bolt (like on a classic AK47) and the recoil spring was located behind the bolt (like on an MP5) instead of in the gas tube. While SIG claims these changes were necessary for technical reasons on this extremly compact assault rifle, they led to certain reliability issues - unusual for the company. To address this, the SG 552 was updated, resulting in the SG 552. Externally, it can be distinguished from its predecessor by its charging handle (flat lack plastic) like on the SG 550 and SG 551. Internally, the SG 553 features a separate gas piston and a recoil spring located in front of the bolt, within the gas tube, again like on the SG 550 and SG 551.

The SIG SG 552 is also known as the '''Commando''', while its successor, the SIG SG 553, is known as the '''SOW''', short for '''Special Operations Weapon'''.

The latest generation of the SIG 550 rifle series. Due to import restrictions by the BATF, SIG builds these new version rifles in the United States.
