The weapon you refer to, the Type 99 machine gun, is essentially a Type 96 light machine gun modified to accept the more powerful 7.7x58mm Type 99 ammunition. The weapon depicted in Strike Witches looks like a Japanese Navy Type 99 "machine cannon," which is indeed fed from a drum as depicted and fires a far larger round (note that in the image of the assorted characters, Yoshika Miyafuji and Mio Sakumoto are noted as carrying "13mm Type 99"). However, I think the weapon being used in this anime is a fabrication; my research indicates the Type 99 cannon fired 20mm rounds, not 13mm. These are clearly two different weapons with the same designation (Type 99) - the weapon you refer to, the Type 99 machine gun, is essentially a Type 96 light machine gun modified to accept the more powerful 7.7x58mm Type 99 ammunition. During the first stages of the assault, Jamie Shannon ([[Christopher Walken]]) and Jinja ([[Eddie Tagoe]]) put Sionics Two Stage Sound Suppressors on their Uzis - and use them to take out the sentries. Shannon's is also equipped with a small Star-Lite scope.

== Manville 25mm Projectile Launcher ==

Known as the fictional '''"XM-18"''' in the movie, the multi-shot grenade launcher itself is the late model variant of the '''Manville Projectile Launcher''', originally designed in 1936 as a rotary 12 ga shotgun. Several internet sources claim that the "XM-18" was the first Manville 12 ga shotgun (25 round capacity), but that is incorrect. The version in the film is the late model 25mm Manville with 18 round capacity. As has been said in many online sources, the explosive effects of the Manville in the film are a piece of fiction. The device was designed to fire 25mm tear gas grenades or flares. By the early 1940s Charles Manville developed his final version of the Manville Projectile Launcher, this time in 37mm with a 12 round capacity, but even with the advent of World War 2 occupying everyone's thoughts, the orders for a multiple grenade launcher didn't catch, especially since, when fully loaded, the Manville would be incredibly heavy. By 1943, the Manville Launcher was scrapped. After decades of no production, the Movie "Dogs of War" generated incredible interest again in the Manville. Frankford Arsenal decided to renew the production with new materials and developed 12 ga, 25mm, and 40mm versions - calling it the Frankford Arsenal '''MM-1'''.

The '''M1-L1 Triple-Pulse Rifle''' was a fictional automatic weapon used by a crew of pirates led by Hanover ([[Wes Studi]]) in the movie ''[[Deep Rising]]''. It had a rotating cluster of 5 barrels and was described by Hanover as being water-tight, air-cooled, and feeding from a 1,000-round magazine. The weapons' caliber is never stated, but during one scene where the guns are fired by the pirates, 5.56x45mm (.223 Remington) brass is shown dropping at their feet. It was also described as being manufactured in the People's Republic of China (the crates containing the weapons were adorned with Mandarin characters).

In reality, the prop M1-L1 rifles were built upon [[Calico Series of Rifles and Pistols#Calico M955A|Calico M955A]] submachine guns (chambered in 9x19mm) and outfitted with 100 round helical magazines, and the rotating barrels on the weapons were not functional (they were fitted around the real barrel of the Calico, and were rigged to spin when the trigger was pulled, hence giving the illusion that the weapon fired through them).

There is a long barreled pistol, done up as a rifle (it is a Clone of a Colt Single Action Army pistol) that has a carbine length bull barrel, and a bipod and black synthetic buttstock. It commonly appears in television shows filmed in Canada and is apparently common in Canada, but nearly non-existent in the United States. Since the 'shootout' scenes of this film were done in British Columbia, I assume that this is another one of those weird hybrid handgun/rifles that I've seen so many Canadian Armorers use.
