Strike Witches (ストライクウィッチーズ ,Sutoraiku Witchīzu) is a mixed-media project originally created by Humikane Shimada via a series of magazine illustration columns. It was later adapted into two light novel series, two manga series, an anime OVA, and a televised anime series. The story revolves around teenage girls who are essentially moe anthropomorphizations of military planes. The OVA preview episode was released on January 1, 2007. The televised anime series later premiered on July 3, 2008, concluding September 18. Official confirmation of a second season of the anime was announced on February 27, 2009.

Plot
Set in a world similar to Earth in the mid twentieth century, Strike Witches tells the story of a fight to protect that world using a combination of magic and technology. The titular Strike Witches are young women with high magical potential who are recruited into militaries around the world to fight against the enigmatic Neuroi, which began an invasion of unprecedented scale on human territory in the year 1939. This puzzling enemy force has appeared frequently and without warning in many areas across the world throughout history. The weapons of the Neuroi mostly take on forms similar to aircraft, but their most troubling tactic is the spreading of a corrosive miasma. Not only do normal humans have no defense against this miasma, but the remnants of the land affected by it are processed by the Neuroi into new weapons, crumbling huge sections of former nations into the sea. As the miasma seems to be unable to spread across large bodies of water, humanity has designated such areas as their main lines of defense.

In order to bring out their potential for use in battle, each Witch equips a unique machine onto their legs: the Striker Unit. With the Striker Unit equipped, they gain the ability to fly and their tapped magical potential provides the strength to utilize weapons far too heavy and powerful for a normal person. Also created is a defensive field that can protect the Witches from the Neuroi's miasma as well as other physical weaponry, making them humanity's trump card in the war. The franchise's main media focuses on the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, defending the Britannian home islands, in a parallel to the Battle of Britain.

The weapon you refer to, the Type 99 machine gun, is essentially a Type 96 light machine gun modified to accept the more powerful 7.7x58mm Type 99 ammunition. The weapon depicted in Strike Witches looks like a Japanese Navy Type 99 "machine cannon," which is indeed fed from a drum as depicted and fires a far larger round (note that in the image of the assorted characters, Yoshika Miyafuji and Mio Sakumoto are noted as carrying "13mm Type 99"). However, I think the weapon being used in this anime is a fabrication; my research indicates the Type 99 cannon fired 20mm rounds, not 13mm. Carried by Christopher Walken, Ed O'Neil, Tom Berenger, and the rest of the mercenaries at the beginning of the film, when they are fleeing a Central American Airfield. They are not real CAR-15s nor XM177 rifles. Special Effects Unlimited, Inc. converted Colt Sporter Carbines with the 16" barrels and made them resemble the XM177 series of short rifles with an aftermarket flashhider.
Uzi
The main weapon used by the mercenaries during the final assault. There are a mix of real Uzi Submachine Guns and MAC-10s dummied up to resemble Uzis. Similarly modified MAC-10s (fake Uzis) have been seen in Raw Deal, High Risk, Stripes and The A-Team.
During the first stages of the assault, Jamie Shannon (Christopher Walken) and Jinja (Eddie Tagoe) put Sionics Two Stage Sound Suppressors on their Uzis - and use them to take out the sentries. Shannon's is also equipped with a small Star-Lite scope.

Manville 25mm Projectile Launcher
Known as the fictional "XM-18" in the movie, the multi-shot grenade launcher itself is the late model variant of the Manville Projectile Launcher, originally designed in 1936 as a rotary 12 ga shotgun. Several internet sources claim that the "XM-18" was the first Manville 12 ga shotgun (25 round capacity), but that is incorrect. The version in the film is the late model 25mm Manville with 18 round capacity. As has been said in many online sources, the explosive effects of the Manville in the film are a piece of fiction. The device was designed to fire 25mm tear gas grenades or flares. By the early 1940s Charles Manville developed his final version of the Manville Projectile Launcher, this time in 37mm with a 12 round capacity, but even with the advent of World War 2 occupying everyone's thoughts, the orders for a multiple grenade launcher didn't catch, especially since, when fully loaded, the Manville would be incredibly heavy. By 1943, the Manville Launcher was scrapped. After decades of no production, the Movie "Dogs of War" generated incredible interest again in the Manville. Frankford Arsenal decided to renew the production with new materials and developed 12 ga, 25mm, and 40mm versions - calling it the Frankford Arsenal MM-1.

The Manville 25mm Projectile Launcher was primarily by Christopher Walken and Tom Berenger in the final assault. The 'shells' are aluminum casings designed to take 12 ga blanks

M60
Used in the final assault. First on a fixed mount by the Zangaran troops and then by the mercenaries including Derek(Paul Freeman) who removes it from the mount for the final shootout at Kimba's compound. It should be noted that former SAS trooper Derek does the "correct" thing during most of his weapons use in the movie by firing short, controlled bursts from both the M60 and his Uzi.

Campa (Carlos Gallardo) shows up to the firefight with a pair of guitar case machine guns. Robert Rodriguez has commented that the guitar case machine guns were built from MAC-10s.
<br>Based on the sound effects made by the guitar cases, I'm pretty sure they were supposed to be miniguns concealed in there, even if they used MAC-10s as the firing portion of the prop. Hexslinger 16:06, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) packs matching Ruger P90s as his main weapons in the film. Tavo (Tito Larriva) fires a Ruger P90 at El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) as he flees the shootout at the Tarasco bar. It's likely that it's one of Banderas' P90s simply being reused in a different scene. In the shootout at the Oro verde bar in Saragosa, El Mariachi pulls out a Sentinel Arms Stryker 12, along with the sawed off 12 gauge, that Buscemi described as "The biggest hand cannon I've ever fucking seen." El Mariachi used it to send several thugs flying (unrealistically) but sadly, it is the only time he uses it. == Beretta 93R ==

Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida) seems to have a taste for exotic pistols, the Beretta 93R he carries is a very rare version of Beretta's popular 92FS model capable of 3-round burst fire. Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida) Beretta 93R is taken by Zamira (Angel Aviles) who makes use of its burst fire capability in the attack on Navajas (Danny Trejo). The Beretta 93R is later reused by one of Bucho's henchmen who fires at El Mariachi as he jumps from the roof of Carolina's (Salma Hayek) book store.
Codpiece Revolver
Although we never see the Codpiece Revolver fire it's one of the few firearms in the film with dialogue devoted to it. This same codpiece revolver was later reused by Robert Rodriguez in From Dusk Till Dawn. Originally a scene was shot where El Mariachi used the codpiece, which was hidden under his pants, to shoot Ponytail thug, before whipping out his Ruger P90s and finishing him.

Smith & Wesson Model 19
The Tarasco bartender (Cheech Marin) uses a suppressed Smith & Wesson Model 19 revolver. In reality, very few revolvers can be sound suppressed because of the gap between the cylinder and barrel. The 1895 Russian Nagant revolver is one of the rare revolvers that can be sound suppressed. Upon firing, the cylinder moves forward and seal with the barrel, leaving no gap. You can see it here.
MAC-10
Most of Bucho's (Joaquim de Almeida) men are armed with suppressed MAC-10 machine pistols that are most prominently featured in the Tarasco bar shootout, some with mock suppressors, some without. You will recognize the scene between El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) and Empty Gun Man (Diego Sandoval) as inspiration for a similar scene between Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) and Neo (Keanu Reeves) in The Matrix.
Guitar Case MAC-10
Tavo (Tito Larriva) fires a black Desert Eagle in .50 AE caliber (determined by bore diameter) at El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) as he flees the shootout at the Tarasco bar. Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida) also begins to kill his own men with the same black Desert Eagle. == Beretta M93R ==

Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida) seems to have a taste for exotic pistols, the Beretta M93R he carries is a very rare version of Beretta's popular 92FS model capable of 3-round burst fire. Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida) Beretta M93R is taken by Zamira (Angel Aviles) who makes use of its burst fire capability in the attack on Navajas (Danny Trejo). The Beretta M93R is later reused by one of Bucho's henchmen who fires at El Mariachi as he jumps from the roof of Carolina's (Salma Hayek) book store.
Campa (Carlos Gallardo) shows up to the firefight with a pair of guitar case machine guns. Robert Rodriguez has commented that the guitar case machine guns were built from MAC-10s.
Based on the sound effects made by the guitar cases, I'm pretty sure they were supposed to be miniguns concealed in there, even if they used MAC-10s as the firing portion of the prop.

The Ruger P90 is also the pistol Tavo (Tito Larriva) uses to put a bullet through The Pick Up Guy's (Quentin Tarantino) head.

The M1-L1 Triple-Pulse Rifle was a fictional automatic weapon used by a crew of pirates led by Hanover (Wes Studi) in the movie Deep Rising. It had a rotating cluster of 5 barrels and was described by Hanover as being water-tight, air-cooled, and feeding from a 1,000-round magazine. The weapons' caliber is never stated, but during one scene where the guns are fired by the pirates, 5.56x45mm (.223 Remington) brass is shown dropping at their feet. It was also described as being manufactured in the People's Republic of China (the crates containing the weapons were adorned with Mandarin characters).

In reality, the prop M1-L1 rifles were built upon Calico M955A submachine guns (chambered in 9x19mm) and outfitted with 100 round helical magazines, and the rotating barrels on the weapons were not functional (they were fitted around the real barrel of the Calico, and were rigged to spin when the trigger was pulled, hence giving the illusion that the weapon fired through them).
Taurus PT92
Due to a continuity error, the MacManus brothers' Beretta 92FS pistols become Brazilian-made Taurus PT92s in several scenes. They are distinguished by their frame mounted slide stop safety instead of the slide mounted decocking safety found on the Beretta. The assassin (name?) also uses a pair of stainless sound suppressed PT92s to kill the family in the flashback as Rocco explains why they should kill him.
Colt Python
David Della Rocco (David Della Rocco) carries a snub nosed Colt Python with a stainless finish and most notabley uses it to kill the three men in the diner. Some people are inclined to believe Rocco uses a Colt Diamondback instead of a Python because Det. Greenley (Bob Marley) claims they recovered .38 slugs at the crime scene. One should note that a .357 Magnum and a .38 Special round are dimensionally exact in diameter (but not length), so the bullet head would be .38 regardless of which round was used.
Papa Joe Yakavetta (Carlo Rota) also uses a Colt Python, his with a blued finish and a 6" barrel later in the film. Some people claim it is a Colt Anaconda due to its seemingly large size, yet the Anaconda was never released in blue finish, only stainless steel.
Ivan Checkov (Scott Griffith) and his partner both carry custom Desert Eagles, his a Mark VII and his partner's a Mark XIX. They appear to be built up from both Chrome and Black finish models, with some features gold plated. Agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe) refers to the bullets found at the scene as being ".50 caliber", yet the guns used are actually .44 Magnum.
Glock 26
While summing up the shootout in front of the house, Agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe) fires his Glock 26 pistol into the air, which is something a real FBI Agent would never do. Although, admittedly, Smecker isn't what someone would call "all there". Plus this might just be in his head, rather than actually taking place. (This seems likely since none of the cops look nearly startled enough to have witnessed an FBI agent firing his gun into the air in the middle of a suburb.)
Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) McManus use pairs of sound suppressed Beretta 92FS pistols when killing various criminals in the film. They also give David Della Rocco (David Della Rocco) a pair of Berettas when they recruit him to their team.

Desert Eagle

(This seems likely since none of the cops look nearly startled enough to have witness an FBI agent firing his gun into the air in the middle of a suburb.)

Il Duce (Billy Connolly) wields a Smith & Wesson Model 629 Snub as one of his six guns during the shootout outside the house. While originally thought to be a Model 66 revolver, the muzzle diameter of the gun is clearly larger than the 686 Snub in his right hand, ruling out the gun being a .357 Magnum.
There is a long barreled pistol, done up as a rifle (it is a Clone of a Colt Single Action Army pistol) that has a carbine length bull barrel, and a bipod and black synthetic buttstock. It commonly appears in television shows filmed in Canada and is apparently common in Canada, but nearly non-existent in the United States. Since the 'shootout' scenes of this film were done in British Columbia, I assume that this is another one of those weird hybrid handgun/rifles that I've seen so many Canadian Armorers use.
