Several questions
Model 17 Stielhandgranate
Are you sure that it is Model 17? It seems to me that this is Model 24, as in every other movie with German grenades. I doubt that a real Model 17 could survive until 2011.
Yes, O. K. But aim is perhaps to inform the viewer what weapons the his heroes to used in historical reality. I write about it here - All Quiet on the Western Front (1979)--Pandolfini 00:28, 14 May 2012 (CDT)
:I cannot agree. If we see Browning Hi-Power in 1920 we say that this is anachronistically used Hi-Power and don't say that this is a Model 1903, right? So if a Model 24 grenade is used, we say that a Model 24 is used in the movie though it stands for Model 17. I think so. Greg-Z 02:20, 14 May 2012 (CDT)

In the Browning Hi-Power to see at a glance, so I can blame. Otherwise, the presumption of innocence applies everywhere, right? Accuse the filmmakers of anachronism by blurred shot? It was there that I can write it straight, it's not a grenade, but the sand full dummy :)--Pandolfini 02:52, 14 May 2012 (CDT)

So what are we saying here? That a gun that didn't come into production for another 15 years is in the movie representing...what, a Colt Model 1903 Hammer? I wonder why the film maker did not just use a Colt 1911, or a Luger, or a C-96 Mauser? Those guns are all readily available and fit the 1920 time period. This smacks of laziness on the film maker's part. Harleyguy 22:05, 15 June 2012

:A Model 17 doesn't need to survive. It's very easy to make custom props.Chitoryu12 00:51, 14 May 2012 (CDT)
::Of course. But I doubt that any movie maker would make such props when there are plenty dummy Model 24s. And the grenade on the screenshot looks more like Model 24. But I don't insist if you are completely sure that this is Model 17. Greg-Z 02:20, 14 May 2012 (CDT)
::It's very difficult to tell with the blurry photo, but it does seem to have a thinner head than a 24. But since 24s seem to have varying head sizes, I don't think there's really any way to properly tell unless we can find a screencap showing the little lever-like handle on the side of the head. I have found in Internet a screenshot from the movie:

This light MG is most likely based on Czech Vz. 59 which is disguised as MG08/15.

I think that it is definitely a Czech Vz. 59. Also if there are no objections as I mentioned earlier I have been trying to clear up the spelling and grammar on the page and will continue to do so.
BA-27
The armored car which is "playing the role" of Soviet BA-27 (which, in turn, didn't exist in 1920) is a modern replica of Polish Vz.34.
And it's not by chance the model Vz. 59?--Pandolfini 06:02, 14 May 2012 (CDT)
: It's hard to say for sure - too far and too blurry. If this is disguised Vz.59 too (as with 08/15 and the aircraft MG) then the disguise is very good. Greg-Z 06:49, 14 May 2012 (CDT)
The problem with identifying a rifles
After regaining independence, the Polish Army were armed with Mosin1891, Mannlicher M1895 and Mauser M1898. Along with the "Blue Army" soldiers French rifles appeared ( Berthier and Lebel ). But also Lee Enfield and Japanese Arisaka! Especially those last two I can not distinguish between them, so it is possible that the hero has not in his hand Enfield, but that is a Japanese rifle :)

:Arisaka rifles were purchased in Japan by Russian army in 1914-15. In 1917-18 when the old Russian army collapsed, its weapon including Arisaka rifles came in hands of the armies of Poland, Finland and other new states. So Arisaka in this movie is historically correct. Greg-Z 06:47, 14 May 2012 (CDT)

Thx very much, Greg! --Pandolfini 07:21, 14 May 2012 (CDT)

:Interesting, but I don't think that is an Arisaka. The front sight is too large and too close to the front of the barrel, the stock end cap is too long, and it has a guide for the cleaning rod under the barrel which the Arisaka doesn't. Looks more like a Mauser of some sort. --commando552 08:34, 14 May 2012 (CDT)
:::The front sight is similar (if not the same), but I think the rifles here look like they are full size, rather than the wz. 29 which is a carbine. Also note that the rifle in the film has the top of the barrel exposed forward of the barrel band (metal loop that goes around the middle of the handguard) unlike the wz. 29 which is covered. --commando552 17:59, 14 May 2012 (CDT)
That's a M91 Mauser, not a M98. James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok (Jeff Bridges) carries, as the real Wild Bill did, two Colt 1851 Navy revolvers, sometimes using a red sash around his waist in lieu of a holster. However, the Colt Navys used in the film are the Richards-Mason cartridge-converted models, which would be anachronistic to the earlier scenes of Wild Bill firing his revolvers in the 1860s (However, the two Navys he fires during the Deadwood shootout, retrieved for him by Jane, aren't cartridge-converted). Several other characters, notably Jack McCall (David Arquette), Phil Coe (Dennis Hayden), and Ed Plummer (John Dennis Johnston) all have cartridge-converted Navy revolvers.

There are several weapons left out of this great movie, gentlemen, so thought I'd mention. There was the ubiquitous 1873 Winchester, a cut down double barrel shotgun that a cousin of the Younger brothers, also named Younger, uses when he and Bob Younger (Keith Carridine) are accosted in the woods by two Pinkertons and is killed and also kills one of the Pinkertons. Cole Younger (David Carridine) is shown in a scene early in the movie, when Jesse is wounded and Ed Miller is expelled from gang, sitting on a horse next to his brother Jim (Robert Carradine) holding a single barrel shotgun.
Based on that screen-capture alone, I'm not entirely convinced that's a Dragoon. It looks too small in his hand. Not sure it's an 1851 Navy either, though. Would need some more screen-shots to be sure. -- Blokhed 3/30/11
Keith Carradine is clearly holding a Dragoon based on the hook holding the loading lever up under the barrel. The Walker did not have this feature and it's way too big a gun to be a 1851 Navy. Harleyguy 21:37, 9 August 2011

I was in error in my original post. Have since learned that there were only 456 of the Model 1874 Carbines made but over 32,000 of the Model 1863 were converted to .50-70 Goverment centerfire cartridges. I stand corrected. However, I would like to point out that Maggie carried a cut down double barreled shotgun as well, with what looks to be a 20" barrel. It's a rabbit-ear hammer model, possible a Colt 1878, she has it on her saddle in a front, right side scabbard, and is seen drawing it when she comes upon the carnage of her boyfriend having been roasted alive in a cow skin, her hired hand shot dead with arrows and stripped naked, and then finds her youngest daughter Dot wandering in a daze. Also at least one of the Indians in the "brujo's" gang is using a Model 1873 Winchester. --Harleyguy 19:06, 27 July 2011

I would have thought that standard Army issue (until the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted in the 1890s) would have been some variant of the Trapdoor Springfield. I understand that private purchase was an option in the Army at some points, I did not know that the Sharps was standard issue in the nineteenth century outside of a unit like Berdan's Sharpshooters. Perhaps someone can lead me out of my fog of ignorance? --Ruzhyo 19:47, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

It's a rabbit-ear hammer model, possible a Colt 1878, she has it on her saddle in a front, right side mount, and is seen drawing it when she comes upon the carnage of her boyfriend having been roasted alive in a cow skin, her hired hand shot dead with arrows and stripped naked, and then finds her youngest daughter Dot wandering in a daze.

I added it. --Mauser 01:18, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

There's another gun missing as well. When the Wild Bunch rides into the small village after crossing into Mexico to change clothes and horses, and the Gortch brothers start saying Sykes doesn't deserve a full share, Sykes draws a Sharps rifle from a scabbard and cocks the hammer back while quietly moving into position to fire. He is also carrying the big Sharps when he is shot in the leg by Strother Martin's character and rides to safety in the rocks.

The Luger P.08 is shown with the prostitute who shoots Pike in the back, but one is also briefly seen held by the senior German officer ("Commander Frederich Mohr of the Imperial German Army" as he identified himself when Angel kills his ex-finace, but Commander is a navy rank) that Pike shoots after the brief pause when he and Dutch kill Mapache. The Luger flies out of his hand when he starts to fall after being shot by Pike's M1911 (or apparently Star Model B!). One other point if you don't mind, the guy identified as a "Mexican officer" trying to fire the M1917 machine gun in one photo is really the junior German officer, in German uniform, that Tector shoots with his Model 92 and then Lyle finishes off, if I remember correctly, with his shotgun.

Thanks for this site guys, I love it!!

Sykes rifle
After the meet up with Freddie Sykes (Edmund O'Brien) after the opening robbery, Sykes is shown carrying a Sharps Model 1874/77 rifle, also towards the end when he is shot in the leg by Strother Martin's Springfield .30-06. Harleyguy 3 August 17:10

Alternate Ending
Anyone who's read David Morrell's novel "First Blood" knows of the changes in this movie from the novel. The alternate ending is not far off from the ending of the novel, where Trautman kills a wounded Rambo who also has a broken rib from a cliff fall into a tree; although Trautman's shot is from a shotgun a few feet away and blows John Rambo's head off. But virtually everything else has been changed or reversed; the location, characters living and dying, personalities. Trautman is asked at the end of the novel how he feels about killing his friend, and he replies "better than knowing he was suffering".

They apparently wanted to make the movie into a statement for Vietnam Vets as well as try to create a franchise, because in the book not only does John Rambo die at the end, so does Sheriff Teasel who was shot similtaneously by Rambo. And not only do both of them die, but Rambo kills all the deputies, the dog handler, and all the dogs and severely wounds one of the town's people who comes out with a gun. The location is changed from Kentucky to Washington State, so the scene in the book where Rambo meets a moonshiner and his son who gives him shoes, clothes and a .30-30 Winchester is gone (because in Rambo's escape from the jail basement and the sadistic cop he eventually shoots out of the helicopter, spraying blood and brains on the pilot and freaking him out so much he crashes at the low level in the canyon he's flying). In the novel, Rambo guts a deputy in the basement after beating the snot out of the sadistic one. His only crime is being an apparent "vagrant" in the Kentucky town and trying to get something to eat, and not liking being run out of town before he gets it. The only survivor in the woods is Sheriff Teasel who survives by crawling on hands and knees through thick sticker bushes, and who, as written by David Morrell, is not the arrogant, violence prone red-neck that Brian Dennehy portrays him as, but is a decent guy who is a Korean War veteran (the book was published in 1972), who's father was killed mistakenly in a hunting accident and the dog handler had become a surrogate father to him as a child. Rambo is not the "I don't want to kill anyone so don't make me do it" guy of the film, he is a hardened Special Forces operative who suffered terribly for a short time as a POW, and a flashback to that due to the brutality inflicted on him in the jail basement is what sets him off. He kills without emotion, without remorse; screw with him and you die--sometimes quicky and somtimes painfully, but you die. Also in the movie, along with the Model 94 Winchester the moonshiner gives him, Rambo is carrying a Colt Python that he recovers off the deputy's body that he shot from the helicopter door; and Sheriff Teasel is not armed with a Model 66 but with a Browning Hi-Power, which he shoots Rambo with at the end of the book as Rambo shoots him with the .357 Magnum. He dies seconds after Rambo, watching Trautman's ejected shotgun shell twirl through the air and hit the ground. There's almost a metaphysical bond that develops, where Teasel can get inside Rambo's head and "see what he's thinking" in anticipating his moves.
You're quite correct that Roosevelt carried a Colt DA raised from the Maine, presented to him by his brother-in-law W.S. Cowles. My understanding is that Roosevelt did own a nickel plated Colt SAA with ivory grips embossed with the the large TR on them, so it's not completely out of whack to have him shown with it in Cuba; even though he didn't carry it there. But there are several historical inaccuracies in the film (and it's a great movie) such as showing William Tiffany being shot dead on Kettle Hill when in reality he died from Yellow Fever on Long Island after the regiment was moved out of Cuba, the fictional presence of German military advisors (there were none), the presence of Maxim machine guns on the San Juan Heights (the Spanish army had them but they were not deployed on the San Juan Heights). Also, while I enjoyed Gary Busey's portrayal of Joe Wheeler, he needed to get down to his "Buddy Holly" weight to accurately portray Wheeler, who was a slight physical figure, but a great cavalry leader. Also Frederick Funston was not in Cuba at this time and did not participate in the war there, he'd been in Cuba with the revolutionaries in 1896 but contracted malaria and his weight dropped to about 95 pounds, the Cubans granted leave and he returned to the U.S. Funston was commissioned as a colonel in the 20th Kansas Infantry, U.S. Army, a month after war was declared and landed in the Philippines and fought there during the "Insurrection". He was not in Cuba during the war. harleyguy
This rifle, while a cool and all too rare addition to a movie, is anachronistic to the film. There is a picture of William McKinley in the sheriff's office, so I must presume the setting of the movie is from 1899 to pre-September 1901, since Robert Duval's character is using a Savage Model 99. Definately not a Schofield, it's a New Model No.3. I uploaded a picture of the thing for another movie, once I find the bloody thing I'll add it.
This rifle, while a cool and all too rare addition to a movie, is anachronistic to the film. There is a picture of William McKinley in the sheriff's office, so I must presume the setting of the movie is from 1899 to pre-September 1901, since Robert Duval's character is using a Savage Model 99.

The Claridge Hi-Tec/Goncz GA has a controversial history, primarily due to the feud between the designer Lajos John Goncz and his own Goncz Armament, Inc. of North Hollywood, CA and the subsequent manufacturers of the gun, Joe and Gail Claridge of Claridge Hi-Tec, Inc. in Northridge, CA. Goncz designed the original pistol and rifle carbine versions of the firearm between 1984 and 1990. Claridge took over production and made some slight manufacturing changes (changes that Goncz did not agree with) and produced more firearms in the years between 1990 and 1994, when they were forced to close shop due to legal problems with Goncz. Despite their feud, both versions of the firearms are finely machined pistols with some heft and finish. The versions of the guns are nearly identical outwardly except for the manufacturer's name on the sides. There are several versions of the Goncz/Claridge pistol - a short barreled standard version, a slightly longer barrel match version and the 16" barrel carbine with slight variations within each subcategory - including a choice between a deep blued finish and a satin steel finish.
I second that. A trivia note I found interesting, that Brian Keith played Theodore Roosevelt in this movie, and in another John Milius tv movie, Rough Riders, played Roosevelt's predecessor William McKinley. I believe that was Keith's last role, as he died not long afterward and you can see he's ill in that movie. A fine actor, Brian Keith was.
The gun is listed twice for Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. He just used the cartridge conversion model (which hadn't been invented at the time)as did everyone else in the film. If I remember correctly Lee Van Cleef carried a Remington New Army. He had a cartridge belt on it but in the closeups of the final shootout at the graveyard you can see percussion caps on cylinder. Harleyguy 11 May 2010 03:57

:Very nice work MPM, the page came out great. The screencaps on here before were pretty low res but I love when you cover Israeli made film because you know so much about the guns (and vehicles). Great job! - Gunmaster45

"The use of a Browning M2 is curious, since Israeli Armorers have easy access to real DShK guns they have captured from the Arab armies over the years."
Obvious counterpoint to this: they may have the guns, but I imagine unless they captured an Arab army film studio they probably don't have huge amounts of movie-safe 12.7x109mm ammo for the DshKs; similarly, there's the issue of familiarity with the M2, spare parts availability, etc. If it was going to be used a lot, I can't see them being able to justify the cost of using a real DshK over a mockup to the producers, especially when they were already faking the helo and had the wrong gun on the T-55. Tim 04:16, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
::Not really. Stallone was using a REAL DSHk with real blanks in Rambo III when they were filming in Israel. The attack on the Muj Camp and Stallone firing at the helicopters from the hilltop was ALL the real deal. Making blanks is no big deal for any country with an established motion picture industry. it's just a matter of convenience, which is why we see so many Combloc weapons in movies filmed in Eastern European countries, even when (in the movie) they're supposed to be in the "U.S.". The Israelis have access to tons of Arab arms already, ever since the first serious Arab Israeli war of 1948, and the one in 1956 and the one in 1967 and 1973. ;) There was NO really good reason, unless they didn't have DSHks blank adapted (which would be weird) or they had a lot of leftover .50 cal blanks (which the U.S. gave them as military aid). The Military training blanks work pretty well and I noticed that these guns in the film didn't have the super giant fireball that MOVIE blanks usually do (See StarShip troopers for super fireball 50 cal blanks). MPM

RGD-1
There is no such thing as Soviet `RGD-1` hand grenade. Actually it is an `F-1` hand grenade, in service from World War 2 era. It was still in Soviet Army service during Afghan war, as well in Russian Army service during wars in Chechnya.
::Sorry, back in the 1980s when a lot of our information was sketchy about Russo weapons (and there was no internet) we always called them RGD-1s. As information becomes more accurate, and people today forget we didn't have internet communications with people in Russia (plus there was previous few books on Soviet weaponry). You guys would know better than I do, I only raise the question because I came across a link saying it's a T-62. But it's from Wikipedia, so I guess consider the source. I only raise the question so it can be answered here. This is the link:
I only have it on VHS to date. Just watched it on Fox Movie Channel, and noticed that some of the actors are carrying Winchest Model 1873's. Constable Alvin Adams (Andrew Stevens) carries one when he shoots a deer with Sgt Edgar Millen (Lee Marvin) and Sundog (Carl Weathers), and is carrying one at the shootout at Albert Johnson's (Charles Bronson) cabin. So is the man who gets his arm caught in a bear trap outside Johnson's cabin. Johnson also has a single shot shotgun that he cuts the barrel off down to the forestock (which he points at Millen when he opens the window), and a single shot bolt action rifle that he cuts the buttstock off of. He shoots the one-eyed "Charlie" who rushes the cabin and kicks in the door, only to be shot dead by Johnson who's lying entrenched on the floor with these two guns. One of Hazel's (Ed Lauter) pals uses a SxS shotgun to shoot at Johnson when he opens the cabin window to talk to Millen, and is shot dead by Johnson with the Colt Peacemaker. There's a continuity error in the film also, the scenes where Millen is opening his trunk and taking out weapons such as his Colt New Service revolver and 12 gauge Winchester pump shotgun, and has a leather shotgun shell belt over his shoulder when talking to Angie Dickinson before going out the door, are all when he's leaving to lead the posse of psycho trappers and his three Mounties to Johnson's cabin. But they have it inserted in the film to look like it's after the shootout when they're leaving to pursue Johnson. As much as I like this movie, I sure wish someone would make a movie based on the facts of The Mad Trapper of Rat River. The books on this guy are a fascinating story.
