The fourth entry in the Silent Hill horror game series (and, to date, the last installment directed by Team Silent, the original developers of the series), Silent Hill 4: The Room stars Henry Townshend as the player character, a renter of Room 302 in the South Ashfield Heights apartment building, who for no apparent reason becomes trapped in his apartment after a rash of nightmares.

Five days after first being trapped, a hole opens up in his bathroom that leads to a series of surreal alternate worlds, where he witnesses a string of gruesome murders, inflicted on people brought into those worlds. When the few people he meets are killed in these ghostly domains, they die in the real world as well. As the perpetrator closes in and Henry's own apartment starts becoming possessed by otherworldly influences, Henry must uncover the dark secrets lurking in his home and its true connection to a dead man named Walter Sullivan before it's too late.

__TOC__<br clear=all>

Overview
This game was the first to make a marked departure from the formula set in the first three games, featuring gameplay centered around a hub (Room 302) that can be returned to by entering holes in the various alternate worlds Henry can visit, and only a single save point, which is a red diary in Room 302. The game also features an inventory system that can hold only 10 separate items--somewhat oddly, each magazine of ammunition (whatever the amount it holds) is treated as a single item in and of itself, occupying a single "slot" in the inventory, which is the same amount of "inventory space" as a full-sized construction spade or pickaxe would occupy. This forces the player to either travel light, or else return to Room 302 to dump unnecessary items in a storage chest whenever Henry can't carry any more and needs to take another item.

Partially loaded-magazines can, however, be consolidated back into full magazines using Room 302's storage chest by simply dumping off ammunition into the chest and retrieving it--the ammunition retrieved will then be in the form of fully-loaded magazines. The player can also tactically reload a drawn gun by using a slot of its ammunition, and if that slot holds ammunition equal to or less than the spare capacity in the gun, then the ammunition in that slot be emptied as it is loaded into the weapon. Another useful feature unique to firearms in this Silent Hill title is the ability to penetrate monsters in a line with Henry's gunfire--if Henry fires a shot through a monster and another is behind it, those monsters directly behind the first one hit will also take the same damage from that shot.

M1911 Pistol
Simply called "the pistol" in game, the M1911 is found in Room 302 after visiting the first world through his bathroom portal once. Its caliber is undisclosed, and its magazine capacity varies depending on the difficulty selected at the start of a new game (a feature that would later appear in Silent Hill: Homecoming). On the Easy difficulty, the pistol holds 12 rounds. On Normal, it holds 10, and on Hard, it holds only 8. It is fast-firing but possesses only moderate stopping power against the inhuman monstrosities that populate the worlds Henry visits, and is the only ingame firearm that Henry must obtain.

This weapon is also the only one in game that can use the incredibly rare silver bullets, which must be loaded one at a time into the pistol but can knock down the indestructible ghosts Henry will encounter in a single hit. However, they will eventually rise again to torment him unless pinned to the ground with a similarly rare item called the "Sword of Obedience," which will render a pinned ghost harmless and immobile unless the Sword is removed.

Composite Revolver
A revolver of undisclosed caliber (though likely in .357 Magnum) carried by Richard Braintree, one of Henry's fellow tenants in South Ashfield Heights. It appears to have design elements from the Colt New Service, the Colt Single Action Army, and the Webley series of revolvers. After Richard is sucked into the fourth alternate dimension that Henry can visit, Richard then uses it to defend himself from an onslaught of ape-like monsters (called "Gum Heads" ingame) who endlessly dog him in his attempts to escape that world. Henry can later obtain and use this revolver for himself upon entering Room 207 of the alternate South Ashfield Heights apartment building.

Unlike the M1911 pistol, the revolver's capacity (realistically) does not change with the difficulty setting chosen at the beginning of a new game. The revolver also possesses markedly higher stopping power than the M1911 can muster, reliably flooring non-ghost monsters in a single hit where they can be finished off with a good stomp from Henry's foot. However, it fires and reloads more slowly than the M1911 can, and cannot use silver bullets. Ammunition for this firearm is also rarer than that for the M1911.

[[Image:SH4_-_3PV_-_Revolver_Cutscene_1.jpg|thumb|none|601px|Richard Braintree makes a grand entrance by falling off a building in the Alternate South Ashfield world, Revolver in hand.

MAC-11
If the player scores 90 points or more by the end-of-game ranking screen, this firearm will appear in Room 102 of the Alternate South Ashfield Heights apartments after starting a "Brand New Fear" game. It is simply called the "submachine gun" in-game. Henry himself cannot use it, but his neighbor, Eileen Galvin, can fire it full-auto using just her unbroken arm, and is always accurate no matter how long she fires it. As an added bonus, this weapon can be used indefinitely by Eileen.

The MAC-11 is implied to be the weapon used in the fourth murder of the Walter Sullivan case (a key element of the game's backstory), where the perpetrator killed a pet store owner and his entire stock of pets using a submachine gun. Its previous use as an instrument of indiscriminate massacre is likely the reason behind its insidious drawback--just holding the weapon will gradually cause Eileen to become more and more possessed by the forces behind the hellish environs that Henry must protect her from, and beyond a certain point this mounting otherworldly influence will cause Eileen to go insane and possibly even harm Henry (but not with a weapon), though the same result will occur if the player fails to protect her from damage by ingame monsters, with or without holding the submachine gun.

Room 101's Arsenal
The tenant of Room 101 (nameless in the game, but described as a "gun maniac" by memos Henry can find) keeps an arsenal of model firearms in his room in the Alternate South Ashfield Apartments. The "gun maniac" is said in a diary entry to have killed one of his neighbor's cats with a "converted model gun" with a shot at point blank range, suggesting that his models may be airsoft replicas. While they are useless to Henry, the arsenal in the room is notable for including models of various firearms found in previous entries in the Silent Hill series.

Tango & Cash is a 1989 action film starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell as mismatched LAPD narcotics detectives who reluctantly join forces to catch the individuals behind who set them up to take the fall for the murder of a federal agent.
The Smith & Wesson Model 36 is the revolver carried by LAPD Detective Ray Tango (Sylvester Stallone). In an homage to Jackie Chan's Police Story, he uses it in the opening sequence when facing down an approaching big rig that is transporting cocaine. He appears to be able to hit the windshield, and make a tight group, from a long distance, despite the poor sights on the gun. Tango also is seen taking the Model 36 from Federal Agent Wyler (Lewis Arquette) during a confrontation. Tango later gives Cash his revolver during the quarry chase.
Browning Hi-Power
The Browning Hi-Power can be seen being used by Cash (Kurt Russell). An error can be noticed in the roof scene. Cash pulls the slide back to put a round in the chamber, but the slide stays opened. In the following scene, the pistol is pointed at Requin's leg, but now the slide is locked. In the next scene however, the slide is open again.
Walther PPK/S
A stainless steel Walther PPK/S is Cash's backup gun. When he takes his handgun from his drawer, he mentions the someone must be messing with his gun because the sights are off. In this Walter, the rear sight is dovetailed into the slide and adjustable, but the front sight is fixed. When it is later found at a crime scene, the gun is fitted with a sound suppressor.

__TOC__<br clear=all>

Overview
The fourth entry in the Silent Hill horror game series (and, to date, the last installment directed by Team Silent, the original developers of the series), Silent Hill 4: The Room stars Henry Townshend as the player character, a renter of Room 302 in the South Ashfield Heights apartment building, who for no apparent reason becomes trapped in his apartment after a rash of nightmares.

Five days after first being trapped, a hole opens up in his bathroom that leads to a series of surreal alternate worlds, where he witnesses a string of gruesome murders, inflicted on people brought into those worlds. When People are killed in these ghostly domains, they die in the real world as well. As the perpetrator closes in and Henry's own apartment starts becoming possessed by otherworldly influences, Henry must uncover the dark secrets lurking in his home and its true connection to a dead man named Walter Sullivan before it's too late.

Simply called "the pistol" in game, this M1911 design is found in Room 302 after visiting the first world through his bathroom portal once.

Unknown Revolver
A revolver of undisclosed caliber carried by Richard Braintree, one of Henry's fellow tenants in South Ashfield Heights. After Richard is sucked into the fourth alternate dimension that Henry can visit, Richard then uses it to defend himself from an onslaught of ape-like monsters (called "Gum Heads" in game) who endlessly dog him in his attempts to escape that world.

MAC-11
If the player scores 90 points or more by the end-of-game ranking screen, this firearm will appear in Room 102 of the Alternate South Ashfield Heights apartments after starting a new game. It is called the "submachine gun" in-game.

Its previous use as an instrument of indiscriminate massacre is likely the reason behind its insidious drawback--using the weapon will gradually cause Eileen to become more and more possessed by the forces behind the hellish environs that Henry must protect her from, and beyond a certain point this mounting otherworldly influence will cause Eileen to go insane and possibly even harm Henry (though not with a weapon).

Colton White (voiced by Thomas Jane) begins the game with a Colt 1851 Navy .36 caliber revolver. In cutscenes, this gun seems to replace the actual gun the player uses, with a few exceptions. Strangely when used in the slow motion "bullet time" quick draw, the open top revolver appears to be the later manufactured revolver 1860 Colt, as the underside of the barrel looks nothing like the 1851 Colt revolver.
Jenny (voiced by Kath Soucie) gives Colton a nickel Smith & Wesson Schofield from Ned's trunk in the whore house. Its break open action helps make it faster to reload. However, in the item bag (accessed through the menu) and when used on screen, the revolver appears to be a nickel Remington 1875.
The Volcanic 10 lever-action repeating pistol is taken off of one of Hoodoo Brown's deputies. It is the pistol version of the unsuccessful Volcanic rifle, which was remodified into the famous Henry rifle. For some reason, this pistol is made out to function like a revolver instead of a repeating pistol. (I don't believe a single repeating lever gun ingame is depicted as one, for that matter.)

Winchester Model 1866 "Yellow Boy"
Colton White starts the game off with a Winchester Model 1866 "Yellow Boy" repeating rifle. For some reason, he never works the lever when firing it, only when he reloads it.

Ferguson Rifle
Ned White's (voiced by Kris Kristofferson) gun of choice is the Ferguson Rifle, invented by British Major Patrick Ferguson. It is depicted as have the fastest rate of fire, which can be considered accurate as the Ferguson Rifle was one of the first breach loaded rifles in British service (and the world) and saw some very limited use in the American Revolutionary War. The rifle was a great improvement over the standard Brown Bess, being able to average 7 rounds a minute compared to the maximum of 4 rounds a minute of the Brown Bess in the hands of a skilled user. However the rifle was more complicated to manufacture, and was 4 times the price of the standard Enfield musket.
Hollister takes this rifle for himself when Ned is killed. Colton takes it from Hollister when he is blown up with dynamite, using it to kill "Reverend" Josiah Reed (voiced by Brad Dourif).

Sniper Rifles
Sharps 1874
Clay (voiced by Tom Skerritt) gives Colton a Sharps 1874 sharpshooter rifle to fend off Magruder's men. The gun is shown to have the power to sever limbs, which is a little off from reality, but not by much considering that it was chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. (Then again, so is people being sent airborne by shotgun blasts, something shown in this game as well.)

Winchester Model 1887
Colton gets a Winchester Model 1887 shotgun off Crude, the main man trying to burn down the whore house. It is inaccurately depicted as a single shot shotgun, instead of a lever action repeater.
Nock Gun
Thomas Magruder (voiced by Lance Henriksen) uses a prototype gun similar to the Nock Gun, a seven barreled flintlock rifle that fired all seven shots at once. This prototype is an 8 barreled shotgun that fires each shot one at a time. It is ungodly powerful.

Nock Cannon Gun
This ridiculous 8 barrel portable cannon looks exactly the same as the Nock, except it fires cannon balls larger than the barrels themselves. It's a pretty far fetched design.

Howitzer Cannon
A Howitzer cannon is stolen from MacGruder's men by Colton and Clay's men. It is a stationary gun capable of rapid fire unlike a real cannon.

Gatling Gun
Seen several times in the game, a Colt Gatling Gun is used on several occasions by Colton and the bad guys. It's top-loading magazine is shrunk somewhat to detract away from a limited capacity, as the gun will fire forever.
The Last of the Mohicans is the 1992 historical war drama based on the classic James Fenimore Cooper novel of the same name and a 1936 feature film adaptation. Directed by Michael Mann, this historical epic tells the story of Nathaniel "Hawkeye" Poe, the adopted son of Huron Indians, who is caught in the conflict between the French and the British in North America during the French and Indian War of 1757.

The character of "Nathaniel Poe" was not named as such in the original book, and is a modern construct from the original character of "Natty Bumppo", whose name did not seem so strange to the audiences of the author's time. The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Poe, Madeleine Stowe, Russell Means, Eric Schweig, Johdi May, Steven Waddington, and Wes Studi.
The colonists during the Revolutionary War favored Kentucky Rifles since they had used them for hunting and when fighting the British, they definitely knew how to use them. The gun was used all the way up to the War of 1812 before the Scottish Percussion design slowly phased the flintlock design out. Some Percussion models of the rifle were made, but by that time the rifling had become so common, the gun became obsolete as a frontline weapon after the Mexican American War.

The character of "Nathaniel Poe" was not named as such in the original book, and is a modern construct from the original character of "Natty Bumppo", whose name did not seem so strange to the audiences of Cooper's Time. The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Poe, Madeleine Stowe, Russell Means, Eric Schweig, Johdi May, Steven Waddington, and Wes Studi.
A British soldier led by Maj. Heyward, is shown firing what appears to be a flintlock Grenade Launcher. These launchers were usually a Brown Bess Muskets with attachments which were cup shaped to fire grenades. He is seen firing the weapon into the air using it like a mortar.

Colt Series 70 Combat Government Model
Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) carries a Colt Series 70 Combat Government Model. This was the only model in that time frame that would have had black grips with the gold medallions, and combat style hammer. The Series 70 Combat Government Model was the forerunner to the Combat Elite. It is notable that in the novel, Bell remarks in an internal monologue that he still likes "the old Colt's .44/40" and that if that fails to stop an attacker the best one can do is throw the gun and run. Later in the book he draws, but does not fire, a single action revolver presumably loaded with tried and true .44/40s.

Remington 700
Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) uses a Remington 700 when hunting a Pronghorn.
According to the novel , the rifle Llewelyn uses to hunt Pronghorn is a "heavy barreled .270 on a '98 Mauser action with a laminated stock of maple and walnut. It carried a Unertl telescopic sight of the same power as the binoculars [10x]". This description closely matches the Parker Hale 1200 series rifles , although the movie prop is a Remington 700 variant, based on the appearance of the action and the placement of the safety.
The stock appears to be that of a 700VLS and the rifle is most likely chambered for .243 Winchester or 308 Winchester, though for pronghorn a .223 Remington or .22-250 Remington could work. The 700VLS is anachronistic, as it was first produced in 1995.

Shotguns
Winchester 1897 Sawn-off
Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) uses a 12 gauge Winchester Model 1897 sawn off pump for a large part of the film, and uses it to wound Anton. Winchester no longer makes this model, and those still in circulation are considered collector's items. The actual firearm used in the film was a clone of the Winchester 1897 made by Norinco. In the DVD special features, the armorer mentions that the fact that in the book it says that Moss cocks the hammer on the shotgun, clued him into the fact that it was a Winchester Model 1897.

Remington 11-87
Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) uses a sound-suppressed Remington Model 11-87 Semi-Auto shotgun with a sawed off barrel in four shooting scenes in the movie.
(As with the TEC-9, this is also anachronistic because the Remington 11-87 was not designed until 1987 and the film takes place in 1980.)

Other
Captive Bolt Pistol
Chigurh seems to prefer to use a Captive Bolt Pistol on his victims when he can. He also uses it to blow out door locks. The Captive Bolt Pistol is a pneumatic gun that fires a bolt into the brains of cattle to stun them before slaughter. Like the name suggests the bolt never entirely leaves the gun, it is shot out by air (or a blank) and then retracts back into the gun by return springs. Though not a "firearm" it is a gun and does play a big role in several scenes. Anton most likely chose this weapon because it requires no ammunition, is almost completely silent, and leaves no physical evidence (bullets and/or empty casings).

The Claridge Hi-Tec/Goncz GA has a controversial history, primarily due to the feud between the designer Lajos John Goncz and his own Goncz Armament, Inc. of North Hollywood, CA and the subsequent manufacturers of the gun, Joe and Gail Claridge of Claridge Hi-Tec, Inc. in Northridge, CA. Goncz designed the original pistol and rifle carbine versions of the firearm between 1984 and 1990.

Claridge took over production and made some slight manufacturing changes (changes that Goncz did not agree with) and produced more firearms in the years between 1990 and 1994, when they were forced to close shop due to legal problems with Goncz.

Despite their feud, both versions of the firearms are finely machined pistols with some heft and finish. The versions of the guns are nearly identical outwardly except for the manufacturer's name on the sides. There are several versions of the Goncz/Claridge pistol - a short barreled standard version, a slightly longer barrel match version and the 16" barrel carbine with slight variations within each subcategory - including a choice between a deep blued finish and a satin steel finish.

A 6 shot cut down rifle/pistol version of the Winchester 1892 rifle was used as a short carbine and called the "Mare's Leg". Though some of the Mare's Legs seen in films are cut from original Winchester 1892s, clones built by Marlin, Rossi and Puma are also seen in chains of commerce. Since the front sight was removed with the cut down of the barrel, many examples of the Mare's Leg remove the rear sight to lighten the firearm. It is not necessary since the gun is a 'point and shoot' close quarters firearm.

Per ATF regulations, any 'pistol' cut down from a firearm that was originally a rifle is a 'short barreled rifle' and subject to all the restrictions of short barreled long guns. The Puma M-92, and Rossi "Ranch Hand" clones of the Mare's leg are built from the factory as a pistols, so per ATF regulations, they are handguns and not classified as short barreled rifles.
This was a Spanish copy of the Winchester 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine made in Eibar from 1915-1938 for use by the Spanish Civil Guard. It was commonly used as an inexpensive substitute for Winchesters in films made after WW2. It can be identified by the sling swivels, militay-style folding rear sight, and front sight ahead of the muzzle band.
Outland is a 1981 science fiction thriller starring Sean Connery as the new federal marshal for a mining colony on a moon of Jupiter. The film was directed by Peter Hyams and contains similar themes with the classic western High Noon.
The main weapon seen in this movie is a sawed off Browning 2000 shotgun. Federal Marshal William O'Niel (Sean Connery), Sheppard (Peter Boyle), as well as other marshals are seen using the shotgun, but it appears that there was only one practical shotgun used in the film. The two hitmen hired to kill O'Niel use them as well, with infrared scopes attached. In the scenes where multiple guns are present it's likely the others are props. O'Niel's shotgun is tapped for the giant scope mount that the hitmen use. You can see the small screw hole just forward of the loading port. This supports the "one gun" theory.
