In the video they said that the original Martian rifle had problems, whereby if the rifle was ever dropped or knocked the exposed barrels would always get bent so they were constantly straightening them, so my guess is that the new design is to make them more robust. FYI, the middle rifle is apparently Amos's rifle and is built from a SCAR.
